Here are some random thoughts on focus stacking. For fun, I compared Enfuse, Zerene, and Helicon. For those that don't know, enfuse is an open-source program that can do stacking. We all known that Helicon and Zerene work very well, but how does Enfuse compare?

My biggest problem with enfuse was always the halos:

People often try and give different parameter sets for enfuse but I've found all of them create halos, whereas Zerene and Helicon are much better about that. I tried passing a positive value to "saturation-weight" in Enfuse (adding --saturation-weight=0.4), which reduced the halos but of course also the detail. I tried combining a shot with halos with one with a positive saturation weight int the Gimp and it actually worked pretty well, but it takes a lot of time (maybe 10 minutes with a complex shot).
