Wishes for the next x100.

As a x100 user, I was interested in upgrading to the V but due to its scarcity as new and the prices as used (sometimes higher than new), I think I’ll wait for the VI (I spent already too much time trying to find a good used V (lots of scams here).

Apart from what is often discussed and for what i have no clue (Ibis, next sensor, better AF, true weather sealing…) and some issues (are those fixed?) from the early days of the X100V (overheating, noisy motor,…), i would like to add two things to the wish list:

- i think Fuji could make a film simulation, that could be named « vintage black ad white ». The B&W simulations existing seem to me either too grey and flat, either too « metallic », lacking the beauty and the balance we see in prints from the greats.

- as phones tend to steal from cameras, why couldn’t cameras steal a bit from phones? I am thinking of sort of « touch-id » or «face-id », or even just a secret code. It could work on a daily basis: at the start of the day, we unlock the camera and shoot. If the camera is stolen, it could be used for just the rest of the day and would be impossible to use afterwards. Wouldn’t it be useful?

Excuse me if it looks irrevelant.

Personally I would hate that feature on my cameras!
I want to switch them on and use them, regardless of lighting, spectacles on or off, face covering on or off. Having to be recognised by my camera every time I want to use it would be a no go.

ok, I agree. But something to prevent it to be stolen too easily? Is it stupid?

How many times have you had a camera stolen? If so, under what circumstances?

I can imagine it happening if you are street-shooting in certain places. When I’m using my X100V it’s on a wrist strap, in case I let go of it. Other tethers are available.

Regardless of possible risks, I never want to see Face ID or PIN codes on a camera.

Have you delved into custom recipes?

Nothing wrong with anti-theft features.

Yes! But as a x100 owner, I never manage to be satisfied with the results (in b&w).

It would be nice to change the lens on the next iteration. Either go wider with a 16mm fixed or a 35mm fixed. Didn’t like the 23mm at all.

Yes, I remember our house broken when I was a kid and my father's Canon been stolen with all his lenses. I have not experienced that myself but the two times I bought a used camera (without invoice), I asked myself "how can I be sure it was not stolen?".

F/1.4 and I’d pay whatever.

Re: Wishes for the next x100

I’ve mentioned this a number of times already but I would like a new focus ring.

I dislike the current one for street in particular, when you generally want to zone focus, ie fix focus in one place and leave it there. As it is, the ring is super-easy to drag when adjusting the aperture ring, and there’s no way of easily gauging the focal distance by feel.

One solution would be a Leica-style tabbed ring with proper marked positions, instead of a “soft” endlessly-rotating ring.

But I would prefer a ring with clicked positions for:

- AF

- two or three customisable fixed focal distances (similar to Ricoh’s snap focus)

- infinity

- and maybe even an “auto hyperfocal” setting which would set the hyperfocal distance in response to the aperture setting

It’s not a new idea, it used to be common in film cameras including many Olympus compacts, and it worked extremely well for casual/everyday/street use.

Something like the Tri-Elmar would be cool, but the trick is to do it without it protruding much more than the existing 23 while maintaining f2; I have no interest in an X100 with f2.8 or f4. The Nisi low profile lens cover, with its angled sides, is already visible inside the OVF's framing guidelines so a larger lens would mean a larger body to move the OVF away from the lens at which point you might as well get the X-Pro.

The X100V has a customizable focal limiter which can be assigned to an Fn buttons and used similarly to snap focus.

Sort of. It’s a significantly inferior substitute. There are some minor issues (you can only have one setting, the camera still seems to drive the AF motor, etc) but the main issue is that it largely doesn’t work in focus-priority mode, because if it doesn’t find something in the focus area that’s at the exact distance you’ve set, it doesn’t achieve focus and therefore won’t fire the shutter.

If you switch to release-priority mode then it essentially works, but now you’ve got two settings to change every time you want to switch between AF and fixed focus.

Anyway… having tried it, it’s not a good enough replacement for proper fixed focus IMO. YMMV.

I would love that! But I remember someone saying it was not possible with the way the lens is conceived.

OMG if there is one camera in this world that shouldn’t have face recognition it is the X100… For obvious reasons.

I rather see the next iPhone generation with physical dials for shutter speed, ISO and EC (the aperture can be dialed in directly on the plastic lenses)😎

Yes! But as a x100 owner, I never manage to be satisfied with the results (in b&w).

Point of clarification…are you comparing the digital files to prints, or to prints made from those digital files?

Nothing wrong with anti-theft features.

I’ve come across many conversations where it is a popular feature request so don’t let the “first vote is a downvote” get you down. A wrist strap isn’t going to prevent you from having your camera taken via threat of force. A camera that is known to be worthless — particularly on the “quick sale” market — might prevent you from being accosted. iPhone thefts haven’t been eliminated completely, but they were significantly reduced by the introduction of these measures. I’m certain the same applies to other high-end smartphones.

Please note that I’m not amongst those who live in fear of having my camera stolen, nor do I refrain from carrying and using it. However, an intelligently implemented anti-theft system is nothing but a positive in my view.

I have no particular issue with the current lens — I used a 35mm ƒ2 rangefinder for many years. Favorite. Camera. Ever. Uunless the X100V is now my favorite ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . However,  I can get behind the “tri-Elmar” suggestion. I have no particular need for, or interest in, another arbitrary fixed focal length.

I’d be fine with a once-daily, or once per battery change/charge cycle passcode. Preferably more than 4 digits. Yes, I recognize the compromise in certain “fast swap” situations. Security is always at odds with convenience. The trick is finding a workable balance.
