What is causing "READ ERROR" on X-T2

Hi Everyone,

No it is not that card read error which is usually caused by hidden files after viewing files on a Mac etc...

No it is not a faulty SD card, multiple cards showing the error in the same camera (X-T2) the same cards working fine in other fuji/sony cameras.

What happened, I have upgraded the firmware to the latest (it is version 4.40 for the camera body) - although I haven't used the camera for a while, but recently it is producing this dreaded error message when reviewing the still images on camera. When I check the images (JPG) on a computer they look corrupted - to a degree, still readable images with lots of colour lines etc.

You may think it could be a hardware issue, but it is not! When I record 4K video, it is done perfectly and saved to the SD card, can easily play it back in camera and looks absolutely fine when reviewed on computer.

It looks like the camera (software/firmware) saving a still image to the card incorrectly and then files become corrupted. It is not affected by JPEG quality or RAW file compression. Also the card has been formatted in camera and/or computer - it has no effect on the error message/issue.

Please help, as my X-T2 has been very close to my heart... this one was my favourite camera.
My suspicion is that it should be the firmware update - unfortunately there is no way to install a rollback version to the camera body.

thx

You should be able to reinstall the previous firmware. The most recent firmware changes the file numbering protocol, so maybe that screwed something up. Probably worth a try if that’s when the trouble started. Do a google search for the previous firmware - it’ll be available somewhere. If not, I probably still have it too.

This is a good option, but you might consider a hard "reset" first. Seems like an unusual coding issue. It isn't something we're seeing by others here with the same body.

If you do go to a previous firmware and find the camera working fine, you probably could then install the current version and not see the problem reappear.

Good luck, and let us know what you find.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

no unfortunately when you try to install a previous version of firmware, it does not let you- you will get a message saying you already have the latest version.

it would be interesting to hear what Fuji would say about it, very weird error

If you haven't tried it already, the hard reset is your best option. Good luck.

Thanks.

I've done factory reset (shooting menu & set-up menu reset) plus in camera format, has no effect unfortunately

I managed to re-install the same firmware version (v 4.40) for the body, it allows you upgrade from 4.40 -> 4.40 actually. It has no effect on the issue.

Interestingly the camera can see the still images (JPEG files) - but unable to display them -on the SD card, can also delete them frame by frame, and once all files are deleted, the "READ ERROR" is replaced by the ! <NO IMAGE> message. It seems to be a weird software issue related to JPEGs or RAW files only.

it is a mystery though why no one else getting this error

Have you tried formatting the card(s)?

sorry: you tried

I don't see much hope at this point. I agree try formatting again, then try shooting with only one card in card slot 1 and then slot 2, going with JPEG only, and then RAW only. Beyond that, you could try making sure that every setting is at default so there is as little demand on the processor as is possible.

I'm going to guess that some component on the main board is failing, but the above procedure might somehow clear out a software glitch... worth a longshot try.

There are lots of X-T2 bodies out there now at good prices because a lot of folks are grabbing the X-T5, or picking up used T3s and T4s... the normal process when a new, similar (traditional dial and screen) camera comes out. Just mentioning that because the timing is never great for a body to fail, but now is as good a time as any!

Since you are able to install the same version, have you tried downloading a fresh copy from Fuji? Sometimes files can get corrupted during a download process.

Best of luck.

If images don't display correctly out of camera then they were corrupted in camera.

I find it difficult to believe that the firmware update is responsible, the update has been out for a long time and we'd have heard by now. Perhaps the contacts are dirty or perhaps you have a hardware fault.

Are images from before the fw update corrupt? Do they display correctly ooc?

Are images from after the fw update corrupt? Do they display correctly ooc?

Re: What is causing "READ ERROR" on X-T2

Yes this could be a hardware fault, as you said the new firmware unlikely be the cause

the only thing is, the 4K videos recorded by the camera look perfect- if it is a hardware fault, it should be related to processing still images only - which is hard to believe, but possible

before the firmware update I had no issues, I have updated the firmware more recently- although did not use the camera for about a year

Have you tried using your camera with X-Raw Studio? Does that still work?

It might be a longshot, but I wonder if the camera would let you reinstall the older firmware if you rename the ,DAT file with a higher number than what's in there now?
