Shutter application for Sony / canon cameras for focus bracketing?

I have been recommended this app to perform focus bracketing it does a lot of other things but my camera already has them

I wonder if anyone here has used it and what are the results

I tested it some weeks ago but then it was unusable for macro bracketing because it allowed only a too small number of frames. I got a refund and came in contact with Grzegorz the developper of the App. After some conversation he managed to implement a bracketing similar to the old b8stack. You can set Start and End position and a step width is fine enough for 1:1 at open apertures.

This stack was done withe the Sony A7Riv, Sigma 105mm Macro at F4.5, stacked with Zerene pmax more than 100 frames.

best regards

Lothar

stacked

and here at f22

at the small size it seems that stacking could be avoided but a 100% crop comparison shows the much more crisp result of the stack

Thank you so you can actually set the focus motor step in the app

This is interesting

Have you tried the sony imaging applicaiton on the computer? I see no trace of steps but have not rigged it yet

I do not know what you mean with "sony imaging applicaiton". I captured all the single frames, camera was controlled via the App and the finale stacking was done by a software called zerene.

There is a windows and mac program to download called imaging edge desktop that could be used for the same purpose assuming it can control focus steps

yes that is b8stack what I mentioned in my first reply, but as far as I remember the camera has be connected via usb. The shutter app can be used more flexible.

Thank you. I have the Sony 90mm which has a lot of focus breathing I think I will struggle with stacking

not when you use specialised software like Zerene

stacker [Zerene Stacker] (zerenesystems.com)

I think you can't avoid "breathing" in macro work because you change the magnification when you focus from let's say 20 to 25cm. So your stacking software has to align and resize all the individual frames. What works very well. I don't know whether Photoshop can do such things.

It depends how deep you go. The sigma is 75mm at 1:1 the 90mm is 45mm is shrinks much more

Photoshop will align but not resize if I recall correctly other software for sure will do better

Can.

It gives weird artefacts when a lens has lots of focus breathing

Re: it works :-)

Photoshop can remove focus breathing with auto-align, and generally offers the possibility to make any necessary correction manually.

With dedicated software you can get some easier results, but in PS you can do anything, if you know how to do it. It is an extremely powerful tool.

Not really

The only way to do it perfectly in photoshop is to align and stretch manually

photoshop is ok for basic stacks of say 16 images with small steps afterwards it starts going off if the lens goes off too much

Auto align just choose between a few of the methods you can choose manually

I think it's the app called "shutter" which isn't a great name for google.  try shutter.dev for the site. my camera isn't supported for stacking so I haven't actually tried it out.
