G5x Mark II new owner tips please

Hi,

I just got the Canon G5x Mark II for a variety of reasons.  I have scanned and read several of the posts on this site and appreciate everyone’s generous sharing.  I love taking pictures outside, hiking, horse back riding, and just generally walking around appreciating nature.  I would appreciate any tips you can give me on how to maximize what this camera has to offer.  I am leaving for Kauai in a few days and will be taking lots of pictures at the beach and of the ocean and tide pools.  Any suggestions are appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

Get DXO Photo Labs, it is helping me get super clean photos from G7 X mark II.

And of course, shoot RAW.

Definitely. I just reprocessed some old G7XII photos with the latest version of Photolab, and am very impressed with the improvements over my original Lightroom versions.

I am maybe late to the game but I generally find G7Xii to be much better than I expected, even wide open at min focal.

You will want at least one spare battery (battery life is not that great) and a simple but convenient camera bag. I use the Canon bag (EDC-100) which is a good fit with storage for the spare battery and not much else. If you're traveling and visiting beaches, take a rocket-type dust blower as you may not be able to travel with compressed air and don't want to be scrambling for it on vacation.

Indeed a good choice. I own and like that camera since its early days.

And shooting raw and using DxO simply gives great results.

You may consider to add a small Gorilla Pod to our bag.

I disabled the option to release the shutter by tapping on the back screen. For me, it is not helpful. Also play a bit around with Touch&Drag on the rear screen to find out if you like it; I have it disabled.

Make use of folders. E.g. for every new day during your trip.

A spare battery was just mentioned above. Indeed a should-have.
Never let the battery be completely empty. If it is foreseeable that you don't use the camera for some longer time (for me that is more than 1-2 weeks) try to avoid having the battery full. 1/2 to 2/3 loaded should be fine.

ND filter on 'auto' works perfect unless you need low shutter speed at bright light.

Continuous AF is not important for me.

I never had any card error. Nevertheless on vacation a have a least to cards with me which I shuffle - new day, new people, new location/attraction etc.. Keep the unused away from your bag. It's not for card error - it's for not loosing all shots on only one card.

Disable all Wifi things unless you really need it.

If there might occur situations where handheld shooting in low light is required, you should try and test how long shutter speed you can do. The G5X2 has a really good IS which supports low ISO in such situations.

Mode select dial. Make usefull setting to the 3 options. E.g. panorama for scene, HDR for filter and <burst, servo-AF, high shutter speed> on 'C'ustom.

For any video stuff, please ask somebody else ...

Pay attention to the mechanic curtain in from of the lens. It is reliable, however it does not look to be too solid.

Have fun! You will enjoy tha camera.

I bought a Kaiser 56mm slip-on lens cap. I'm not certain whether or not its use will introduce its own problems, though (stress on the click ring taking the cap off) so, who knows? Cheap protection for when it absolutely has to be used, my take.
