I wouldn't mind if it was shorter at the long end, say 100mm or even 80mm if that would make it easier for Conon to make it more compact

But what I'm asking for is a better quality lens almost to 'L' level and giving me 24-105mm coverage without having to carry a FF camera - something Canon has always seemed reluctant (if not stubbornly resistant) to do for crop lenses

They did do the EF-s 17-55F2.8 and the 15-85 F3,5-5.6 which were good lenses, especially the 2.8  couple that to the only 2 EF-s primes the 24mmF2.8 pancake and a 60mm macro

so canon only made 4 decent lenses with good build and optics for the EF-s mount in 20 years so i don't hold much hope for RF-s

a mention has to go the 10-18 and the 55-250STM although cheaply made are optically good

the last EF-s 18-55 kit lens the F4-5,6 one is also pretty sharp

In my experience, the 18mm is not wide enough. Canon lenses should start at 15mm because of the 1.6 crop.

i am surprised they did not port over the EF-m 15-45 F3.5-6.3 as canon did with the 18-150 rather than making a new slower lens the RF-S 18-45mm f4.5-6.3 starting at 18mm and not optically as good as the M lens

Purchase Complete, Initial Impressions

Sweet deal for $300! Initial impressions (some a mere reiteration of feedback and comments above):

  • Quiet and fast focusing
  • Light yet does not feel fragile
  • Can do a bit of macro up to around 100mm
  • Sharpness is above what's usual for this price range
  • Just half an inch longer (when fully retracted) than the RF24mm (and slimmer)
  • Obvious downside: Indoor with average lighting, you'll have to be north of ISO800 for the lens to be usable. I've taken shots at 1/10 shutter speeds with 75-80% keeper rate so far

They did do the EF-s 17-55F2.8 and the

15-85 F3,5-5.6

I had two of these and shot 15 mm all the time

now I enjoy my RP + RF 24-105 F4L for travel and walkabout - best 24-105 ever made

I use my 24mm extensively

which were good lenses, especially the 2.8 couple that to the only 2 EF-s primes the 24mmF2.8 pancake and a 60mm macro

The lens hood for it is the same as the EF-M 18-150 or EF-M 18-55. As a matter of fact any lens hood for the Canon EF-M is mountable on the RF-S lenses. AFAIK

BTW, unrelated question.
I noticed you have both the RF16 and RF24.
Is the RF24 bayonet lens hood mountable on the RF16?
I know it would vignette but not when using it with an APS-C body.
TIA.

No. The grooves in the 16mm are wider (24mm's slimmer) so despite the same diameter on where the hood can be mounted, it wiggles when mounted on the RF16mm.

The lens hood of the RF50mm f/1.8 fits the 16mm perfectly (and as you already indicated, you'd use it for cropped shots anyway so vignette won't be an issue). This hood btw won't rotate at all (therefore cannot be mounted) on the RF24mm.

Thanks for let me know.
A couple of days ago upon checking some pictures I decided it was better to get the RF50f1.8 hood instead. Glad you confirmed it works on the RF16 as well since I have both lenses.
I also ordered the hood for the RF 100-400 and is arriving today, I’m expecting it to be compatible with the RF85 f2

It did not, unfortunately.
The RF85 f2 hood mount diameter is a tiny bit bigger like 1 mm more, I even tried to force it but nothing.
More likely Canon deliberately designed it this way so people don't use the wrong hood on FF cameras.

A shame since the length when reversed for storage, fits the shorter 85 lens length perfectly.
Not a big deal, but I was hoping to have the extra shading coverage this longer hood provides and also for sharing this hood between these lenses.

For the 18-150mm it is straight forward unless you want to use the longer EF-M 55-200 hood when using specifically the 55-150 range.
I'm not 100% if those are compatible but all my Canon EF-M lens hoods are compatible with each other.
For the 15-30 when on the R7 there might be alternatives but is hard to find out.

I have the 18-150 and consider it to be more than adequate with a very useful range for travel and landscape work. Pair this with the ef-s 10-18, which is amazingly good for its price,  for your wide angle work and this should cover most of want you want to do.

RF-S 18-150mm sharper than the RF24-105F4L?

here is a vid comparing the 18-150 to the RF 24-105 both on a R7,, the 18-150 seems amazing sharp ..but remember the 24-105 is a FF lens and is disadvantaged when fitted to APS-c but nobody would complain about the performance of the 24-105 on APS-c

I found this review very interesting.  I have both lenses.  I love the RF-S 18-150.   I have the R7 and the R5.   My RF 24-105f4L IS is big and heavy while no better than the 18-150.

I had low expectations for the 18-150 kit lens when I bought it to get quick delivery of the R7 but was very surprise by how good it is for such a small and light weight lens.

TIA.

You're welcome. My turn to ask: The hood for such long lens fits the 85mm?

It did not, unfortunately.
The RF85 f2 hood mount diameter is a tiny bit bigger like 1 mm more, I even tried to force it but nothing.
More likely Canon deliberately designed it this way so people don't use the wrong hood on FF cameras.

A shame since the length when reversed for storage, fits the shorter 85 lens length perfectly.
Not a big deal, but I was hoping to have the extra shading coverage this longer hood provides and also for sharing this hood between these lenses.

Well, you tried!

It will be an adventure to find lens hoods for my 18-150mm and my newest 15-30mm.

For the 18-150mm it is straight forward

Yes, I am using the same hood I bought for my EF-M 18-150. It's the JJC LH-60F, easily available on Amazon for $9.99.

unless you want to use the longer EF-M 55-200 hood when using specifically the 55-150 range.
I'm not 100% if those are compatible but all my Canon EF-M lens hoods are compatible with each other.
For the 15-30 when on the R7 there might be alternatives but is hard to find out.
