How Do You Like the RF-S 18-150mm?

For those who bought the bundle of either the R10 or the R7, any feedback on how you find the EF18-150mm lens? Have an option to purchase one for $300 U.S. and it's practically brand new since the owner bought it with a package and only tested it for a few shots but uses his EF70-200mm almost hundred percent of the time for sports.

Plan to use it for travel (landscape, cityscape, street), when having a couple of primes may not be practical.

TIA!

I usually stay away from these super zoom lenses, but since it is currently the better option out of the only two true native lenses available I went ahead and got it as a kit with the R10.

It turned out to be a good decision since it is has been better than expected, perhaps I got lucky with a good copy, who knows.
I compared it with almost all my other lenses where they share same focal length and I was surprised how sharp it is for such a long FL range, (with or without lens corrections).
It works best as a general purpose lens in good light, it is convenient, fun and light weight, it is relatively compact for what it does, but a bit longish compared to primes, probably twice as long as the other kit lens, so I wouldn't call it ultra portable.
But it focus fast, accurately and is very quiet, the OIS also works great.

One of my biggest surprises was that it almost matches the same resolving power as my Panasonic P&S superzoom FZ1000 at 400eqv vs this lens 240eqv ! mostly due to the sensor differences but still a great performance.

For landscape and cityscape might be narrow at 18mm (29mm eqv) but you already knew this. If this lens started at 15mm, instead of 18, it would be perfect IMO.

So, it is a very good lens if you can live with its limitations, mainly small apertures and not being wide enough at the wide end.

I’ve been pretty happy with mine. I bought it as a kit lens with my R7 since that was the fastest way (at the time) to get the camera, but also because I had the M version on my M6 MKII and was happy with that. I didn’t expect to use it much since I already had a small stable of RF L lenses for my R5 and a large stable of EF lenses to adapt. However it Is so small and light that I often just leave it on the camera when I am walking about, or traveling.  The quality is much better than the price would indicate.

It’s no “L” lens by any stretch of the imagination. But its a good buy.

I have plenty bigger heavier and more expensive lenses that might be used. I also bought the R7 with the 17-150 zoom to get quick June 20 delivery by buying an R7 kit rather than the body only product.

I did not expect this much performance from the 17-150 and was amazed with the performance. Much like the RF 24-240 this RF-S lens was very good a superzoom. These new RF mount lenses are impressive.

Is also use the EF-S 10-18mm with R7 for an ultrawide lens. It is has been small, light and great too as a companion to the RF-S 18-150 to get light and handy high quality coverage from 10-150mm FL. Both lenses are excellent for traveling and work well for outside photographic lighting. I have the compact brighter 16,24, 35, 50 primes but the darker zooms are much easier to use except indoors.

Guess I'll be the one dissenting opinion.  I find it to be kind of soft, with unimpressive DR, and the AF/IS has been a bit on the unreliable side compared to my other lenses.  It's not awful, but I think the 18-135 kit lens I got with my 80D takes much better photos.

I'm not saying don't buy it, since $300 is a good price.  Just don't have unrealistic expectations.

Excellent lens. Very sharp, light, and versatile. Better than the EF-S 18-135 (all versions). It even seems a bit better, to me, than my EF-M 18-150.

DR? What does that mean? Usually, 'DR' is used to mean 'dynamic range', but that's a property of sensors, not lenses. What are you using it to mean?

Re: How Do You Like the RF-S 18-150mm?

I used the R7, 18-150 (and the EF-S 10-18) on my recent trip to Portugal and Sweden. I shot about1600 images, = 56gb. I think the 18-150 is a much better kitlens than what I expected:

  • Surprisingly sharp in all of the range including at 150.
  • Only a handful images were oof in good conditions, a few in lowlight for sure when I was pushing it indoors, but fast silent AF.
  • Light with a huge range
  • IS in the body makes for great pretty sharp images indoor at churches etc, outdoor at night at say down to 1/15th of a second and ISO 1600.
  • I wish it was 24mm FF equivalent (= 15mm crop) at the wide end, the 10-18 takes over then but it is annoying to change all the time in city landscapes

Appreciate this, very helpful - especially since I plan to use it primarily for travel, for when carrying heavier lens sometimes reduce the joy of exploring streets, food, culture.

I would like it more if it was

* 14mm at the wide end,
* constant f/4
* weather sealed

I wouldn't mind if it was shorter at the long end, say 100mm or even 80mm if that would make it easier for Conon to make it more compact

But what I'm asking for is a better quality lens almost to 'L' level and giving me 24-105mm coverage without having to carry a FF camera - something Canon has always seemed reluctant (if not stubbornly resistant) to do for crop lenses

It would still be much bigger and heavier. Look at the EF-S 15-85.

In my experience, the 18mm is not wide enough. Canon lenses should start at 15mm because of the 1.6 crop.

It starts at 18 so canon can sell the 10/11-? that will come in 2023.

For me 24(15X1.6) IS wide enough, so Canon could only sell me 1 lens instead of 2.
