XH2 and 33mm 1.4 for all around shooting?
1

Merry Christmas everyone!

I am currently using a X100V, however, while the camera is amazing for street and landscape, it does lack when it comes to Portraits. Apart from missing out on background compression, I also have to stand around 20-30 cm away from an object to get a nice booked blue (for portrait).

Therefore, I am currently considering upgrading to either the XH2 with 33mm 1.4 WR, or the XH2 with 56mm 1.2 WR. I am aware that the 56mm is superior for portraits, however am afraid it will have it limits for street photography (due to the zoom and not being able to walk backwards very fast on most occasions). Nevertheless, please correct me when I am wrong.

Can anyone share their experience with the 33mm 1.4 as an all around lens for street and portrait?

Merry Christmas to you too! I own the 33mm F1.4 and I'd say it is the most all-round prime you could get. It's focal length is long enough to be pleasing for portraits, and the large aperture certainly helps. Besides that it is just a great allround lens that works for almost everything. I also have the 18mm F1.4 and 90mm F2 which I love in their own respect, but if I could only pick one lens I'd be the 33mm F1.4. Hope this helps!

Re the X100V, I think you can set it internally to 50mm (crop in camera) and maybe use it for portraits.

Now, re the 33/f1.4, I have the Tokina version and also had the Fuji 35/1.4. The Tokina focuses a bit faster, but the Fuji has 2mm more to isolate your subject. The 33/f1.4 focal range and aperture combination is ok for portraits but using also the 56/f1.2 (ver. 1), I would say it's far superior for portraits and maybe one of the best portrait lenses. Some were saying that it focuses slow and it does focuses slower than the more modern lenses, but you can still get great results and when you get they fantastic!

I recently bought the 33 1.2.  It is an amazing lens. Quiet, great bokeh, very sharp, great contrast and very, very fast and accurate autofocus. I'm not a portrait expert but for general use I love it. I also have the 35mm f/2 that I had for my ultralight jacket pocketable "walk around kit" when I had an E-3. The 1.2 is noticeably superior to the f/2 on the borders and corners. Nothing wrong with that lens when size/convenience are the primary concern, but for overall quality the 1.2 is very strong. It is twice the size of the f/2 if you are concerned with an "intrusive" street kit.

PS -- I do a lot of landscapes and some street and have found that a great number of my best photos are in the 30ish to 55 mm range so this plus the 50mm f/2 with the 10-24 give me great wide to mid-range coverage without a lot of weight and the primes are strong in low light.

I own the x100v, XH2 and 33/56 1.2wr

I love all of them! You really can't go wrong with any of them.

For me though, I would grab the XH2 paired with the 56 out of the gate though. Bigger difference in focal length and its truly a classic combo for portraits etc. You can add the 33 in later but having the 85mm FOV and 35mm FOV is a great combo.

Cheers

The 33/1.4 is my most used lens on my XPro3 for walk-around/casual shooting. In fact the 35/2 was most used lens on my XE4 until I got the 27/2.8. I prefer the 40mm-50mm (full frame equivalent) for that type of shooting. While I do have, the 56/1.2 WR, I can't imagine grabbing it to put on any camera (or in a bag) for casual shooting. I prefer the much smaller 50/2 for that type of shooting.

If you like shooting with the x100 and still want a 23mm lens you could buy an xh2 with the 23mm f2 and the 50mm f2 and have the best of both worlds. The 23 for street and the 50 for portraits. The 50mm will give you better compression and about the same DOF as the 33 1.4.

If you like the focal length, it is quite adequate.

I mostly do street photography. My two go too lenses are 33mm f1. 4 and 18mm f/1.4 both the new LM motors. Fast, silent and sharp. You will not go wrong with the 33mm. Beautiful lens.

You could buy the teleconverter (the first gen one works fine and can be found cheap used) for your X100V and try if you like the focal length (it basically turns the X100V into an XF35mm F2).

As for getting an X-H2 with the XF33mm F1.4, that's an idea too (personally I prefer the X-T5 body) but I much prefer the 35mm equivalent focal length so I'm usually taking the XF23mm F1.4 lens and the new 56mm F1.2 WR and my XF33mm mm F1.4 stays at home unless I wanna travel light weight.

The XF56mm F1.2 WR is really nice for portraits and imo a better companion to the X100V.

The XF33mm F1.4 is fantastic though, focuses super fast and it's great for street. Although like I said earlier I find the X100V's 23mm F2 much more versatile, it's a bit wider and makes it much easier to use as an allround focal length.

If you're ending up getting an X-H2, also check out the amazing XF16mm F1.4 and the XF90mm F2.

P.S.: there's also a wide angle converter for your X100V.

33 no doubt, you can almost always step forward, but lots of times you can't step back.

X-H2 with the 33 seems like a dream set up

Before you go out and spend over $3,000 consider these options:

The X100V has a Digital Tele-Convertor that gives you a full sensor shot at 50mm or 70mm. Have you tried this?

You also have the option of a Telephoto lens attachment:

The Tele conversion lens TCL-X100II gives you 50mm optical.

"The “TCL-X100 II” is a dedicated tele-conversion lens for narrowing the field of view by multiplying the fixed focal length by approx. 1.4x, converting it to 50mm (35mm format equivalent). This lens can be used in a variety of situations, such as portraits taking advantage of a natural perspective, or close-up photography from as close as 14cm. When the TCL-X100 II is mounted on the X100V, the camera automatically recognizes the conversion lens and corrects aberrations."

If you add this conversion lens the Digital Tele-Convertor gives you:

I use the 56mm as a "normal" perspective lens all the time for editorial projects. Although it "should" be too long, it just seems to work as a general purpose focal length.  Nice subject isolation. I have settled on the Sigma version, as the only feature you will give up is an aperture ring. Optical quality is great, and the cost is realistic.

I Have the XH-2 and 33 1.4 LM WR for the kind of all around shooting I do they are excellent. I make liberal use of the Digital Teleconverter which is often times not the same as "I just use my feet as a zoom." I also exploit the various aspect ratios (love the addition of 5:4 and 4:3). The 33 1.4 LM WR is a top notch lens, outstanding flare resistance, good sun/streetlight stars, good sharpness at f1.4 (even at farther distances) bokeh is good in many different lighting, aperture and distance situations and the focus and aperture rings are to die for... They're great for all around shooting.

I’ve got both the 33 and 56 and they will both obviously give you more compression and shallower DoF than the x100v for portraits. However both options with an xh2 are considerably heavier and more awkward to carry on the street than the x100v. Plus you’ll get noticed easier if that matters to you. It might be worth considering the 35 and 50 f2 as well. I find both work for portraits and street but using the 56 you need to be looking for compositions further away.

I had the 56mm 1.2 and while its bokeh was "magical", it was very impractical. You see, I shoot most my photos/videos at the gym and I had to step way too far back to get my subject in the frame it was so inconvenient. I then returned it after 2 days and got the 33mm 1.4, it has very nice bokeh, not as nice as the 56mm but still very nice BUT it is much more practical as it's not so zoomed in. I still have to take a couple of steps back when shooting but nowhere near as bad as the 56mm. Also, from the reviews that I've watched about this lens, it seems like it's one of the best when it comes to autofocus.

Why the XH2 ?

The control dials on the XT5 are at lot closer to the X100V, so it is a easy to jump between cameras. The vertical tilt LCD is superb for portraits with the camera still light enough to hold single handed.

( 2 * X100V, WCL,TCL ; 2 * XT5, 18/1.4 + 33/1.4 )

I am going to use adapted lenses, and waiting a bit to see if Fuji update the 50/2 before deciding on the 56/1.2. Will also wait to see if the X100VI gets IBIS before buying a 23/1.4
