Movie digital IS, but no still photo IS

My camera (a Canon T8i) has Movie digital in-body image stabilization, but no still photo IBIS.

Why do you think that is?

I personally turned off the Movie Digital IS because I didn't like additional magnification, and there are a whole host of settings where it didn't work anyway, and it causes artifacts like increased noise, flicker, etc.

I was just curious.

Hiya Steve,

DSLRs in general (those made by Canon and Nikon) don't have IBIS, because it would be too hard to match up the viewfinder display with the sensor.

With mirrorless that isn't a problem, as the EVF display is coming straight from the sensor.

Sony and Pentax went ahead with IBIS in DSLRs anyway.

I would guess it was a cost saving measure.

Because Full HD video has less pixels than the entire sensor, so there's extra pixels to work with to accomplish the digital IS and keep the Full HD.  With stills you're already using the entire sensor.  If they were to offer digital IS on stills, the images would have to be cropped, and people would likely complain about not getting their full res images.

which is accomplished computationally by shifting the individual video frames slightly to align them and crop them to remove the uneven edges

but no still photo IBIS.

because there is no electromechanical sensor-shifting device integrated with the sensor

this is a cost-reduction decision by Canon, not a lack of technological capability — witness the SR (for Shake Reduction, another name for Photo IBIS) feature that has been regularly available on Pentax DSLR camera models over the years

even the high-end pro-oriented Canon 5D models don’t have IBIS

to me, Pentax makes great DSLRs — features + SR + solid build + heavy-duty WR

alas, gigantic marketing usually wins

Why do you think that is?

Canon is greedy
