Lens kit for R5 (and 5D MkII?)
I would like to hear any advice you may have as I continue to build out my RF lens kit.
As background, in 2019 after retiring, I decided to get back into photography after not having done much since my son left for college in 2015. Historically I have taken a lot family, vacation, dance performance, some wildlife in Africa, and sports (dressage, show jumping, fencing, etc.). More recently while spending about half time in Japan, I have started trying out more street photography, landscapes and some sightseeing of historic locations as well. I bought a 5DMkIV with the 24-70mm f2.8L II and the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II. I really like both lens, but tend to use the 24-70mm most.
I tried taking this kit back and forth to Japan, but found it was difficult since I have to help my wife with all her hand carry stuff as well, so I stopped taking it with me. Perhaps it may be easier to take just one lens back and forth if needed...
On my last trip to Japan this Fall, I decided to take the plunge into the mirrorless world with the intent to try to leave the R5 kit for use in Japan and keep my 5DMkIV for use in the US. I got great deals on an R5 and the RF 15-35 f2.8L IS lens due to the strong $. This was my first really wide zoom and I was having a lot of fun in Osaka and Shirahama with it before I left.
I am not sure what the future holds, but hopefully we can keep up spending half time in Japan. I was thinking to try not duplicate buy RF lens that exactly match the EF lenses I have as I may consolidate and use some of the EF lenses on the R5 at some point.
So I am thinking given the high megapixels of the R5, perhaps it would be good to get at least 1-2 prime lenses and crop as needed while still maintaining decent pixel count/quality.
So in addition to the RF 15-35mm f2.8, I was thinking to get a RF 50mm 1.2 L. Then I was thinking to either get the RF 100mm f2.8 L Macro, or perhaps the RF 70-200mm f2.8L IS lens.
I understand that using a prime plus some "digital zooming"/cropping will lose some of the quality, but given 99+% will be viewed on the computer and the best display I have is 5K, I thought maybe I wouldn't lose much. Any perspective? Also having a 50mm f1.2 prime and a 100mm f2.8 macro may open up some new areas to explore which I haven't really had the equipment to do before. To sum up let me lay out the 3 options I am considering for the R5 kit:
Option A (2 primes): RF 15-35 f2.8L IS + RF 50mm 1.2 L + RF 100mm f2.8 L Macro
Option B (1 prime): RF 15-35 f2.8L IS + RF 50mm 1.2 L + RF 70-200mm f2.8L IS
Option C (2.8 Trinity): RF 15-35 f2.8L IS + RF 24-70mm f2.8L IS + RF 70-200mm f2.8L IS
Or if you have some other ideas, let me know those as well.
Sorry for the long initial message. I have been lurking and thinking about this for a while...
