K1 Satobi etc.
2

After sticking on V1.53 firmware for a long time (partly lazy, party too many things happening to want to risk doing an update and bricking the camera) I finally put V2.10 on.

Shooting some autumn bits I thought I'd try Satobi and I rather like it. I took the same Raw (almost the last I shot with 1.53) and got the K1 to process it to JPG with 9 different presets which are assembled below. I'm sure I did do my own comparison of the settings but it was a long time ago.

Satobi is quite subtle. I was a bit surprised how for this test landscape is close to bright and vibrant, and not to natural. Radiant hurts my eyes, and reversal which I don't usually like suits this one quite well. I had the camera set for mono preview and when I processed it in lightroom I made something between Vibrant and reversal, I would automatically have selected natural for the shot I could, use any of these it's really like picking one of 9 kinds of film. I don't have a lens to support FUYUNO and this one doesn't support KYUSHU so I might try that with another lens at some point. I must also repeat this processing test with a portrait shot.

Yes. Bright & Landscape are very close, but it seems like Landscape injects a bit more of a yellow color cast to the whole image.

I've tried all the image tones, but I pretty much stick to Bright the most, followed by Natural when the colors start getting blown out. Like when you shoot scenes with lots of colored lights and/or a lots of color going on. Colors don't blow out as much when using Natural, but some images can look quite flat & boring as well.

It can be worthwhile grabbing a RAW occasionally if you're not quite sure which Custom Image will be best, then you've got the option to sit down later and either re-develop the RAW in-camera with different settings or load the RAW into DCU and try the various settings there.

Reworking a JPG in DCU can be worth trying as well. As the program "knows" what adjustments were made at exposure time it can negate those exactly then apply alternative settings. Admittedly, theoretically, re-working a JPG is a lossy process, in practice, for many applications, it works well, in my experience, especially if the JPG was high quality to start with

Re: K1 Satobi etc.

I am switching between Natural and Bright. But Satobi is really nice, it is somewhere between those two. Unfortunately I have only older cameras (KP, K-S1, K-01), so not Satobi for me!

SATOBI is available as an option in DCU v5.9.5 … works all the way back to the *istD
