I haven't read all the prior threads so I apologize if this has been covered. I re-watched the video. Did anyone notice that the presenter said that their first camera would be a compact film camera and then they would develop a high end compact SLR.

Yes.

The first camera mentioned wasn't described as a SLR. Does anyone think that it may be more of a point and shoot? He talks about young users. The Fuji instant cameras are popular, fun to bring to parties or other social events without needing to know much about the technical end of photography. I'm interested in hearing others' thoughts. Thanks.

The first camera that comes to mind would be a film GR.

We're tracking similar paths here.  That would be my guess as well.

GRf was my first thought when point and shoot was discussed.

Seems to be a series of cameras coming and according to asahi man there are pre production models in existence

GR1s’ are selling for £400 on eBay. A new one might not be the low end camera they were talking about.  If I heard the video correctly they said they were thinking of four cameras, a low end P&S, a high end P&S, a low end SLR and a high end, fully mechanical SLR.

Of course everyone on DPR is most interested in the fully mechanical SLR, but looking at how things like the half frame Kodak reloadable are selling, the entry level is likely to be the best seller.

This one looks quite ok

And this one has very nice range 24-105mm!

These are nice! 24-105 is a very useful focal range, however samples on Flickr show terrible vignetting

Not everyone. I have zero interest in mechanical cameras and hope it will be a retro styled electronic AF camera a la Fuji. Anyway, this forum represents just a tiny slice of the market.

No doubt, if they manage to get the design right to please the young crowd

I too prefer my later fully auto Nikon SLRs vs the FM etc, but that doesn’t seem to be the way on here. I don’t think all DPR readers (particularly digital only) understand how well areas like disposables and reloadables do (because it doesn’t interest them). Pentax really only have to make a Mju ii type camera for it to be a winner.

This forum seems to be a small bunch of old-timers than don't represent the current market Whenever I go to my photo lab, I see one or two middle aged guys like myself and a crowd of young faces.

Right. I'm sure the compact will be the money maker, and the SLR will be more of a prestige project

Over the 6 years I've had the K1 I've been able to do available light photography which just wasn't possible with film.

Absolutely. The first digital camera I ever owned (an Olympus C-5050Z) was already better at capturing low-available-light shots than my SLR, and things have gotten orders-of-magnitude better since then.

It just astounds me that anyone would want to trade that off for some supposed look that you could probably achieve as easily with a digital profile preset. A new camera should add to my capabilities, not take shots off the table.

I will admit to two pre-digital capabilities I wish I had: manual split-prism focusing and the easy DoF preview button. But I  can't say I'd give up AF for them, nor can I think of any other feature I miss.

In general, nostalgia for SLRs seems a lot like nostalgia for hand-crank calculating machines. We have computers now, and we're better off for it.

A new film Pentax? Not interested.
