Canon close up 500D lens

I bought some weeks ago the close-up Canon 500D 77mm lens-filter. C$100 seemed a very reasonable price, much less than the 100mm 2.8L IS macro, for sure.

Wanted to try it with the 70-200mm 2.8L IS II and 100-400mm 4.5-5.6L IS II lenses. The second one isn’t on the list of compatibility.

Any recommendations there?

Well it's the same 77mm filter size so give it a shot to see what happens.  Canon often won't recommend things for infinitesimally small reasons.  Looks like NISI makes one, but more expensive.  Perhaps the 70-200 will suffice.

From what I remember the 500D was pre 100-400 mkII and now been discontinued thus no  update to the compatibility list!

Re: Canon close up 500D lens

It seems NiSi makes some fine micro rails, maybe it’s easier to focus in macro setups with that thing:

At US$200 isn’t terribly expensive, and it seems one turn moves the rail exactly 1 mm. On pictures seems fine machined, though who knows how good is in practice.

They have another rail for half the price, but it seems isn’t as nicely made, and one turn moves 1.25 mm.

There are other options from RRS and Kirk, but that’s not inexpensive anymore.

For optical elements, maybe it’s better to stick with Canon.

Manual focus lens and bellows alternative.

Another alternative is to adapt a used manual focus Nikon Micro lens and Nikon Micro Bellows to your Canon.  I use an adapted Canon FD Macro, since I don't need infinity focus, and will eventually get the FD bellows, since they are generally cheaper.

Re: Manual focus lens and bellows alternative.

I have some macro lenses for Nikon (Classic Zeiss Makro Planar 2/100 ZF.2 and Voightlander Macro APO Lanthar 125mm f/2.5 SL), probably can be adapted for Canon EF without a bellows.

I never did much macro, have some macro lenses for Nikon F and Pentax K, but I’m not sure if to get macro lenses for Sony FE or Canon EF. The 100-400mm II is almost a macro lens, maybe will do fine with the 500D lens.

Would like to have the Micro Nikkor 200mm f/4D ED IF, though it’s still quite expensive used and not very high on priority. The Micro Nikkor 100mm 2.8 AI-S is very nicely made, optically good, but a bit duplicated with my other macro’s for Nikon.

The Zeiss with an inexpensive Nikon to EOS mechanical adapter will be far superior to either of your Canon zooms with the macro filter.  Add the Nikon Micro bellows for even more flexibility.

The concept of a "compatibility" list for a close-up (CUL) lens baffles me.
So long as the diameter is sufficient, which is likely at 77mm, you can use it on anything.
You need an adapter ring for lenses smaller than 77mm.

The effect is more pronounced on longer focal  lengths.

The 500 indicated a 500mm focal length and the D that it's a duplex lens (that's good).
You did quite well on the price. I sometimes regret having sold mine.

A 500mm close up lens has a power of 1000mm / 500mm = 2D (diopters)

At infinity focus with the 500D attached your in focus object will be about 500mm (the CUL focal length) in front of the lens.

At infinity focus the magnification will be approximately focal length / 500mm.
So that's 200mm / 500mm = 0.4x and 400mm / 500mm = 0.8x for your two lenses respectfully.

Have fun !
