Tokina lenses and built in Correction data ?

Do Tokina lenses made for Canon EF have lens correction data that Canon R bodies can read ?

For instance, my R10 can read the Sigma EF 100-400 lens correction data and apply it in camera, specially useful for Video.

But do Tokina lenses come with this as well ?

TIA

Just curious how that works?  Is that Sigma docking system that adjust for MFA? If so why is it required for an ML body?

No, it's because Sigma have cracked the format for the data for in-camera correction of distortion and peripheral illumination.

Someone who's used Tokina will have to answer that.

Oh I see. Thanks for the info. I had a Tokina long ago but I don't the answer to this. Sorry about that.

But are Sigmas the only third party lenses that have it on Canon mounts or other brands with pin connections have it too ?

I took that feature for granted. Not use it for Stills, because of Raw but for Video is a must.
BTW, the R bodies can do Distortion correction ONLY with RF lenses, but CA and Peripheral can be done in video for others brands lenses as long as those have the built-in data.

As far as I know Sigma is the only one. Tamron does not. Therefor Tokina >> highly unlikely.

Some RF lenses need the distortion correction more than my Sigma EF lenses, so that's fine.

My EOS R definitely does distortion correction with my original model EF 24-105mm and I've never loaded a lens profile into a camera in my life.

Connect your R to a laptop and use the Eos lens registration tool, You'll see that many EF lenses are already loaded (in camera firmware) especially the newer lenses are.

Most (if not all) Canon EF lenses don't have communication options like the native RF lenses. So EF lenses will depend on the in camera available profiles.

RF lenses do have their own (in lens firmware) profile and will communicate their profile to a Eos R series camera.

Thanks, but it's academic for me as I shoot RAW, so it wouldn't be worth the hassle.

Lensprofiles are also used (or can be used if available) with the CR2/CR3 raw images in camera

For still yes, for video nope. AFAIK

Can you confirm it works with that EF lens ?

When you turn the dial to video, the distortion correction would be gray out or says data not available, even if is available for stills.

It says distortion correction is not available in video mode. Just shows how often I use video.

Thanks for confirming Sitta, that is what I was expecting according to the Canon R10 user’s manual.

I hope this Tokina 11-20 either has low CA or if it does it could be corrected in camera.

I’ll know this week when it gets delivered.

I can’t wait to test it against my Canon EF-M 11-22 and the EF-S 10-18 !

I have zero expectations about Canon releasing native, wide angle RF-S lenses, let alone with bright aperture. Their loss !

Answer with results.

Answering myself this question after using this specific gear.

Tokina ATX-i 11-20mm f2.8 CF.

Yes, the Canon R10 can do Lens aberration correction with this Tokina lens.
Same with the Canon M6ii.

For Stills the camera menus says, "Correction Data Available"

Available for

  • Peripheral Illumination
  • Distortion Correction
  • Chromatic Aberration
  • Diffraction Correction

Basically all the corrections except Digital Lens Optimizer which is available exclusively for Canon branded lenses.

The only issue is that this Tokina lens name doesn't appear, it is empty.
However, when attaching the Sigma 100-400 lens, its name appears there.
I'm not sure if the R10 applies a generic correction for lenses it can not identify or the R10 does indeed can read the lens data despite not showing its name.
But the final proof is in the pictures.

For Video, only Peripheral Illumination and CA are available. Distortion Corr is only available for Canon RF lenses.
DLO for Video is not possible with any lens yet, even with the top of the line R3 or the latest R6ii, I suppose it needs lots of processing power.
Granted I'd only use these corrections with video since I shoot CRaw for stills.
Ideally, the camera should be able to read custom lens profiles which are more effective due to copy variation.

I have not tested all these corrections but here are some 1:1 tiny crops from the left lower corner, testing for CA at the worst CA situation, aperture wide open f2.8, lens at the wide end, 11mm.

  • OOC JPEG Correction Off
  • OOC JPEG Correction On
  • Corrected JPEG with DxO PL6 from Raw.

R10 Sample

Here is another sample.
More "real world" than stickers on a 2D wall.

The first is with no CA correction.
The second with CA correction in-camera.

So, the in camera correction works for a third party lens like this one, which is good.

I also tried in-camera Diffraction Correction, closing the aperture to f/14 and it works really well. The resulting JPEG was sharper than without dif correction.

No CA corrected, Crop from upper right corner.

In-camera CA corrected. Upper Right corner.
