Live view autofocus on Pentax cameras

Thanks so much for this tip. When I was looking into the fantastic focus gimmickry on the Panasonic S1 family (pre-focus, etc) I wondered why this feature had not been implemented. I have the following questions:

My understanding is that this functionality is restricted to the viewfinder because it relies on PDAF and that functionality exists only in the viewfinder for most Pentax cameras. Since the K70 allows PDAF on the LCD, does catch in focus working live view on the K70?

The K3 iii is rather pricey - which sub 1000 Pentax cameras would have the best catch in focus implementation?

Does catch in focus work in burst mode?

The catch in focus use the centre AF point. When you half press the shutter release and the camera notice that this centre AF point is in focus, it show that in the OVF and you can do a picture, or when you fully press the shutter release button, the camera do at once a picture or pictures (when in series mode) when the center AF comes in focus . When the centre AF is or get out of focus, the camera do not or stop making pictures.

Therefore, with the catch in focus. it's good to have the AF button set to disable AF or AF only by the AF button, because than you are able to do pictures, even when the centre AF is not in focus (for example: you focus to your subject and than you recompose, and do to that the centre AF is now out of focus).

I don't think that the K70 has catch in focus in LV, but only users of this camera could give a right answer.

I don't understand why Pentax is part of the discussion if there is no need for the size, weight and extra complexity of a pentaprism and mirror.

Similarly. I don't understand why anyone would introduce the K-3III into the discussion when it has a fixed rear screen.

There used to be a "bug" affecting some K3III (including mine), because of it you could select other AF modes than center spot in CIF with MF lens ! Like sel S and move the points around with the joystick.

That was super excellent, sadly they fixed it

I'm not sure about what you describe, but to do that I would just switch off CIF and consider the focus alert on center then recompose and that's all ?

It takes time to go to the menu and disable the catch in, therefore this is a fast solution when you just use the catch in but you will deactivate it for that you can do the picture.

The main interest of CIF in my opinion is that it triggers only when focus is acquired ? Maybe I miss something.

You can use it for both (normal focusing or as a trigger ) with your old manual lens and you must not always switch on or off the catch in in the menu, when you use the AF button.

I don't think that the K70 has catch in focus in LV, but only users of this camera could give a right answer.

surely this depends on what your criteria are. Perhaps there are other things about Pentax that outweigh the size and weight (image quality, ergonomics, customisability). I don't like the trend for small dinky cameras hence my choice of the Panasonic S1R and the Fujifilm X-H1.

Agree - for me this makes the K3 iii a non-starter.

I have decided to wait until Pentax offer a tilt lcd with PDAF and catch in focus on the LCD. I will be first in line.
