What to do? Pay 500 euro to repair my x100?

So I made a mistake. After reading a lot about the X100, I decided that I wanted the original, Bayer sensor X100. Found one used for 300 euro. Checked everything on the spot and the camera seemed to be working fine, so I bought it.

Once at home I started to take more pictures and I soon realised that the metering and the results where inconsistent. I suspected the infamous sticky aperture as the camera sat on the shelf for a while. Now I've sent it to Fuji and they want 534 euro for repair: a new lens and viewfinder. That would make it a 800 euro X100...

So now I'm wondering what to do. Loose the 300 euro and be done with it, or bite the bullet and pay for the repair, knowing that at least I will have a good camera with some warranty as well. Prices of the X100 seem to rise very fast and they are often offered for 600 or more for still second hand cameras of which you dont know how good they are.

Any thoughts on this?

i would suggest that you sell it for parts so your loss is not that much.

you might get 150,- for it.

Yes, was my first thought too, but I will still have to find another X100. Because I do want one...

It's a private sale. No warranty...

I wouldn't do it as the cost of repair is more than the camera is worth i.e. it is beyond economic repair.

I thought about that as well. But the question is how much is an original X100 worth nowadays? And certainly one fully checked and repaired by Fuji? Prices seem to rocket atm...

The folks at MPB have some for close to the repair costs.

Thanks! I was looking at their eu site and they were all out of stock. Wonder if they will sell to the Netherlands. Have to add taxes though...

In the UK it costs exactly 155 pounds to repair an X100, and that includes first shipping suitable packaging to you, prepaid postage to send the parcel with the defect camera to Fuji UK and the return shipping of the repaired camera.

You also get a 1 year warranty from the date of repair.

You need a UK address for this.

I read about this. But I dont have an UK address. Also understood that if they decide its beyond economical repair, the flat rate doesn't apply.

Ask the previous owner to refund the 300, or to pay for the repair. The fact is he sold you a broken camera.

I would have it repaired for 155 GBP but not for 500 Euro.

I would try to return it and then buy a used X100 from a reputable dealer such as MPB.com.  They allow returns and also offer a warranty.

As my gran said if you buy cheap you buy twice...

Your gran was right...

Basically it comes down to this: returning is almost sure no option. So I can get it repaired and have a camera with a new lens and viewfinder fully checked by Fuji, have 6 months warranty on the camera and 12 months on the new parts. Or spent approx te same amount as the repair costs at MPB and have a camera with 6 months warranty, but no new lens and view finder with warranty. Either way I guess I have to buy twice.

You could try to sell it on eBay.co.uk stating that it has sticky apertures. You probably can fetch 150 GBP for it.

As alternative to an X100 classic perhaps an X-E1 with the XF 27mm mark I or XC 35mm f2 would also be a good choice - same user interface, same type of first gen JPGs and a bit higher resolution and also a bit sharper. Same size and weight.

You loose the optical viewfinder but gain a lens mount.

Re: What to do? Pay 500 euro to repair my x100?

Thanks for the tip! I started out with film camera's long ago. I still have two Oly OM bodies and a lot of old lenses. My first digital camera was the Olympus PEN and later the OMD, I changed to the Lumix G8. And I have a whole array of lenses with it, only to find out that as time passes by, I hardly use any other lens than the prime 25mm and probably max 10% of what that camera can do.

So the whole idea of getting the x100 is to simplify my gear without losing (much) in IQ. And based on what I could find, I opted for the classic and not the newer versions. I'm an old man, so I need a view finder, just cant really work with a screen...

If you prefer 25mm on your Lumix M 4/3 you may probably find that the native lens of the X100 is too wide. 25mm on m43 has the same field of view as a 50mm on your old Olympus SLR, whereas the 23mm on the X100 with its aps-c size sensor correspond to a 35mm field of view lens on a film camera.

Therefore, on Fuji XF mount you will probably be more happy with a 27mm or 35mm lens.

The X-E1 does have a viewfinder, but an electronic one not an optical one. You should absolutely be able to find an X-E1 with 27mm or XC 35mm f2 lens for less than 500 euros.

Ok, I did it. I told Fuji to repair the camera. So yes, I will have a too expensive x100. But browsing the internet for a few days taught me that these 'classic' x100's are not easy to find below five, six hundred euro. And than I still would have a camera of which I do not know how good it is. Sure, you get 6 months warranty at dealers like MPB, but even if I manage to sell the one I have now I would loose something like 150 euro on it.

So I end up with a camera that is something like 200/250 euro (and often even less) more than the ones for sale at MPB or Ebay. But at least I have a fully checked camera by Fuji, a new lens and viewfinder. Next to that also 6 months warranty on the camera and a year on the new parts.

If any x100 classic is worth the money they fetch nowadays (or probably even more in the future), is another question. But if this turns out to be the camera that I'm searching for the last few years, I will be happy.

And as the Greek restaurant boss always said to me when I had to pay the bill: "it's only money, mister Santifort".

That’s a risk we all take buying used.

I was going suggest you send it in.
Consider a lens replacement could / should also include the shutter since its part of the assembly. It wouldn’t surprise me to know they replaced a lot of other parts as well. It should come back good as new with many years of life.
I sent my X-100 in for a small issue I don’t even remember and they replaced the aperture for free.
Best of luck, and enjoy your new camera.
