Bought an e-p5 want a spare battery...

I just wonder, are batteries from 2015/2016 ok to buy today? I see 'lightly' used on the pre-owned market dated 2015.

Even new. These are 7 year old batteries.

Are there other solutions. Possible to buy a newer Olympus battery? Even these Olympus bln-1 batteries aren't available all over. Price range 55-70...

I've tried some 3rd party batteries in the past and have had middling success with them. Mostly they die out within a year or so.

thanks for help, advice, spiritual guidance

I have 3 OEM BLN-1 batteries date ranging from 2014-2016 and 1 3rd party battery (Watson) that I bought from B&H in 2016 with the spare BLN-1 also from B&H. The 2014 and 2015 BLN-1s both came originally on the E-P5 and E-M5 Mark II. So far the Watson had held up well and hasn't swelled up yet in the 6 years I used it. The only downside, if there is a downside is that the 2016 Watson last a tiny bit less than the OEM 2016 BLN-1 in freezing cold weather. It shows the low battery warning early, but I could still continue shooting with it before it dies completely on my E-M5 Mark II , whereas the OEM 2016 BLN-1 shows the low batt warning a bit later.

I don't use my E-P5 in freezing weather since it isn't weatherproof as my E-M5 Mark II, so don't know how the Watson would perform in cold freezing snowy weather on my E-P5. However my older 2014 and 2015 are already showing signs of dying. Occasionally it simply won't charge -- the amber charging light blinks. But if I take it out and put it back in 2 times, then it starts charging again. The life of the older batteries from 2014-2015 are much lesser than when they were brand new. The 2016 version is still strong as I rarely use that. I plan on buying 1 more OEM BLN-1 battery next year + 1 Watson to replace the original BLN-1 that came with my E-P5 and the 6 years old Watson that I have now.

Hope this helps you decide.

If it was me, I'd get this one:

https://www.duracelldirect.com/digital-camera/olympus/oem-pno/bln-1--aav4ve.html

Actual name brand (although obviously not "Olympus"), two year warranty, they're brand new, and you can buy two of them for the price of one Oly.

Hi Michael, do you know if this duracell will charge in the olympus charger?

thanks...

Good question--it might, as it does not seem to ship with one while most 3rd party batteries do.

I have a number of Wasabi BLN-1 spares and they need the Wasabi charger. Charger and two batteries were something like $25. The shot count is roughly 80% of OEM.

The OEMs live a long time--I have them going as far back as the E-M5; my newest camera taking them is the Pen F.

Cheers,

Rick

I've never tried this particular battery, although the web site says: "Duracell camera and camcorder batteries deliver equivalent performance to the manufacturers original."  Who knows what that means, though.

I've had other Duracell camera batteries and they were fine.

Duracell does not make lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. So why can you buy Duracell-branded Li-ion camera batteries? Because a company called PSA Parts licenses the Duracell name and logo, buys cheap Li-ion batteries from China, and puts a Duracell sticker on them.

They will charge in the Olympus charger, but bear in mind they fake the temperature reading the charger uses for safety and charge state monitoring, so it won't be able to fully charge them, and if you try to charge a battery that is too cold or too hot (from recent use or in high ambient temperatures) the charger has no way of knowing and there is a greatly increased risk of them swelling, possibly even bursting and catching fire.

Never charge aftermarket batteries unattended, especially overnight.

Mine are dated as I bought them but typically they have a maker date near two years earlier than I put on the labels..

All OEM, all working OK still. Most of the time I use a third party USB charger which charges them to 8.4V instead of the OEM charger to 8.6V or so. Maybe the easier life helps them live longer.

If you buy a clone battery then you will also need a clone charger as I understand that the OEM charger will fail to charge a clone battery properly.

I used always Patona batteries. I bought my last ones three years ago, from Amazon.

just wanted to thank you all for the precious info...

Tonight I ordered a new olympus battery from a store in the netherlands...not too far from france

It was about 63 euros with shipping...hope it isn't too 'dated'...

I have oly chargers so thought ok, I don't want to risk anything with 3rd party batteries either in the charger or heavens, in the camera.

Guy, I like your detailed approach...

Can i ask, which 3rd party charger are you using? I mean i have two olympus chargers, and batteries that came with my used body purchase.

Marked May 2013 and June 2013.

I do have a third that I kept when I bought a omd 5 mark ll. That is from 2015. They all seem to work ok.

Will be interesting to see what this store in the netherlands sends, I mean the date.

I like having the spares, need them for some of the longer days of shooting.

And dang, I just love the e-p5 bodies for haptics and the sensors for image quality. Getting them now for about 270 euros shipped is a real bargain. But I guess it's a crap shoot if something dies. I assume repair would be near impossible.

thanks

I bought a couple of the USB chargers from eBay or Amazon the brand name being Top-Max and the same item did appear under a few names. Seems to have disappeared now from searches. It has a small LCD display to show 4 segments and how they are charging.

Search now for 'usb charger bln-1' and see what pops up.

The advantage of the clone chargers is the default slow charge, and the limit at 8.4V so that helps batteries last longer with of course fewer shots per charge, but I always pull batteries early anyway and never seem to have needed more than about 1.5 batteries on any day.

Marked May 2013 and June 2013.

I do have a third that I kept when I bought a omd 5 mark ll. That is from 2015. They all seem to work ok.

The body dates on mine are and labelled at bought date...

  1. 2013-09 for the one marked P5a Sep 2014 (with first discounted E-P5)
  2. 2012-11 for the one marked P5b Oct 2014 (spare)
  3. 2012-11 for the one marked P5c Oct 2014 (spare)
  4. 2013-08 for the one marked P5d Apr 2015 (with second discounted E-P5)

They all behave the same as far as I can determine, never bothered to count shots per charge, but even on a busy holiday shooting they will last until lunchtime when I swap usually whether needed to or not and then recharge everything that night.

When they do start to go to heaven then I will buy clones from a reliable supplier in Australia so can afford to buy quite a few for the same price as OEM would cost. About 1/3 the OEM price at https://www.betterbatt.com.au/catalogsearch/result/?q=olympus%20bln-1 AU$23.24 as opposed to AU$89 for the OEM at my usual store.

Will be interesting to see what this store in the netherlands sends, I mean the date.

I like having the spares, need them for some of the longer days of shooting.

When "busy" I always carry two spares and only use one of the bodies, I have never needed to use the second spare on any day.

And dang, I just love the e-p5 bodies for haptics and the sensors for image quality.

Agree with that, I definitely found "peace at last" when the E-P5 came along, no need to buy anything later, it does what I need.

Getting them now for about 270 euros shipped is a real bargain. But I guess it's a crap shoot if something dies. I assume repair would be near impossible.

It's uncertain how long they retain spares for any camera but if the model failed to sell as well as expected and the ones in the field got little use, then they may have a stock of unused spares that lasted longer than expected.

That's why I bought two new E-P5 at severely discounted prices, to lessen the wear. The first one front and rear dials died on a long holiday so had to revert to E-PL1 style button pushing for adjustments, fixed under warranty and never any more problems, the second E-P5 has had same amount of use and so far the front/rear dials have been OK.

I don't know how it's supposed to "sense" when the batteries are about to overheat, as it does not have a contact to connect to the temperature sensor contact on the battery.

It doesn't need to know the temperature as those clone chargers are always slow chargers and thus keep the batteries from overheating. Fast chargers cause problems and swelling and sometimes fires and always shorten the battery life even if nothing goes wrong.

Slow chargers get more charge into the battery in a more gentle fashion and the batteries will live longer and be more happy. My clone chargers hardly even make the batteries warm to the touch.

If buying a BLN-1 charger today I'd probably buy that JJC one as in the link, very useful having two slots. [edit: Neat design with its own USB cable tucked into its back].

Re: Bought an e-p5 want a spare battery...

I have four cameras that use the BLN-1 battery including two E-P5 cameras.  In addition to the original batteries included with the cameras that I purchased, I have purchased a number of Wasabi chargers and batteries.  I have used Wasabi chargers with a number of my cameras without any problems.  I once received a charger from a different manufacturer that was included with a used camera that I purchased and that overheated and started smoking and I was fortunate to catch it in time.  Since that time, I have stuck with Wasabi chargers and batteries for backup batteries.  My EM1 Mk2 is the only camera that I own where I only use the Olympus charger (4 pin Olympus vs. 2 pin Wasabi).
