R5 w/RF 100-500 pics
29

Have been using the RF 100-500 lens quite a bit lately.   I have to say I've been very impressed with this lens.

The shots of the waves / lighthouse were done on a day where wind gusts were 40-50mph, sustained winds in the 25-30mpg range.  The stabilization effectiveness was amazing.

The shots of the birds were taken at the Canadian Raptor Conservancy

Let me know your thoughts.

Fantastic images. That lighthouse out in the waves is just insane. Imagine living there!

Im fighting the urge to buy a 100-500. The F7.1 is what is holding me back. The results are hard to argue with though.

Due to the reduced background blur?

IMO, The f-number range issue is overblown, considering it goes to 500mm. The f5.6 lenses typically only go to 100-400mm. I think the chart below from Cameralabs does a good job of showing the f-number differences compared to the EF.  You are always 1/3rd of a stop at the same focal ranges. Think of it as having a built-in 1.2x TC that does not have to be changed.

The "real" problems with the lens are the cost and its zoom range is highly restricted with a TC. The TC is also a hassle to put on and take off, but the images are very sharp even with the TC.

The RF100-400 is a much better value but is 20% shorter and not as rugged.

Awesome posting and images! It's my next lens, but I have to let 10 months pass first. I made a deal with my wife when I bought the RF 28-70 that I would wait a year before another big lens purchase. I think I'm at 9.5 months now! Looking forward to it.

Awesome images.   I just purchased a Canon System to supplement my Lumix gear.   I was really impressed with this lens.  I can't wait to use it.  I really like the the eagle pic.  I shoot a lot of eagles and know it is now an easy capture.

Wonderful wild images, thanks.  That surfer is a nutcase.

I enjoy reading about this lens.  It will be my next purchase to be teamed up with the R5 MkII, when it arrives.

Why?  It has the same aperture diameter (500mm/7.1 = 70 mm) as a 100-400 f/5.6 lens.  At the same subject distance that means (1) the same depth of field; (2) the same distant background blur; and (3) the same number of photons collected from the duck.

Tamron, Sigma, and Sony zoom lenses all reach 600mm with an f6.3 aperture, while we are limited to 500mm at a slower f7.1

Just doesn’t seem that competitive to me, but their design philosophy is geared more towards portability. I would have preferred a tiny bit bigger lens, a little more reach, or a little faster aperture with the ability to actually fit the teleconverter properly.

I almost bought one last week and probably will, but doesn’t give me a warm fuzzy feeling.

I have a very sharp copy of the Sigma 150-600 sport, and it is pretty soft (to me, unusable) at F6.3.  At 7.1 it is quite a bit better, but really need to stop it down to F8 before it will produce good images.  i.e. there is not much gain to have a F6.3 lens that is too soft to use wide open.  I have similar experience with the Tamron G2 lens.

Aperture does matter.  I know the 500/600 F4 lenses are in a different league, but F4 over F7.1 (or F5.6 vs F10 with 1.4x tele) makes a huge difference.  The F4 lenses focus better in really low light, and the bokeh of the F4 lenses are night and day better than the 100-500 lens at f7.1.

Yes, there are zooms with bigger apertures.  Then, of course, there are other considerations.  Lots of people would compare instead to certain extremely sharp 100-400/5.6 lenses.

Beautiful photos.

The first owl shot, where it's coming in to land, is the best one for me. It is a fascinating bird for me. The efficiency in their flight is unparalleled by any other.

Second best for me is the next shot, of the eagle with reflection.

Well done
