Against all odds - AF-C with the old, "magic" XF 35/1.4

Dear Fujians

So many AF discussions lately. Just bringing some positivity here

Hey, who wants to tell me that the old "magic" XF 35/1.4 cannot do AF-C

I am sharing a photo I made yesterday. It shows one of my daughters with a horse she looks after.

It was taken with the old XF 35/1.4 (love it), X-T4, AF-C (sic!) with the box placed at my daughter's head, 1/500 s (my standard ss for moving subjects), f/4, auto ISO. Processed with darktable with my standard workflow, using Stuart Sowerby's Acros LUT (thank you Stuart), but nothing special done in post, just lifted the exposure a little, no crop or anything.

Of course that's no BiF or sports.

As you can see it was snowing, and although the lens is not WR, I dared to take it out of the bag for a while. Wiped the metal off a bit afterwards.

I admit, not an extreme AF-C focusing challenge - but let me show that the old XF 35/1.4 can do AF-C

Happy 3rd advent,

Cheers,

Martin

Hi Martin,

Nice shot.  How did you set the exposure for the horse and your daughter?  There's a huge background area of snow.  Spot metering?  Or EC with experience with snow backgrounds?

Cheers, Rod

Thanks Rod.

It was integral metering.

I use the exposure correction dial really all the time. At least with every second shot, probably more.

When there is a bright background such as snow, it is clear that I need to compensate quite a bit. The camera targets just gray.

I simply checked the image in the viewfinder. In such a case I don't care about blown out highlights in the background.

Exposure was almost good but still not enough, so I additionally lifted the exposure with darktable (just a tad). Otherwise I'd just have taken the OOC image. Had already selected Acros for shooting, it was such a good fit to the winter atmosphere.

Kind regards,

Martin
