Really enjoying Lumix 9mm f/1.7 lens

...and with my "ancient" Panasonic GX7.

Handheld!

Love the deep depth of field with a large aperture.  Super for interior photos.  (Raw converted with DxO Photolab.

Nicely done!   I also enjoy the 9mm f/1.7, I haven't used it very often but sometimes it allows me to capture an image that I otherwise would not be able to, even at 14mm.

So am I. One my favourite film lenses was a Pentax 20mm f4. The 9mm is a little wider, a little faster and almost as compact. It is almost permanently attached to my GX9.

Looks good. A 9mm is on my radar, lets hope that one will be also be available in Canada some day. The other one I wanted is the Sigma 56mm, also out of stock everywhere in the country but I'm on the paid-deposit-for-wait-list since Boxing day sale, which I wanted to take advantage of. Who knows how long it will be; months perhaps! Could order from B and H, but lose the CDN warranty, 7yrs, not worth it.

Following in your footsteps, mine arrived at the start of the month, although conditions since then haven't been very conducive to getting out and about with it!

But here's one, taken in the sheltered surroundings of our "Royal Arcade" - a Victorian shopping mall, built in 1899...

And a sparkling spider's web...

(Definitely better if viewed larger!)

Going back to an earlier discussiion about shooting with camera held straight and level etc, I'm certainly finding the Panasonic style of level guide much more useful than the one in my Olympuses!

Re: Really enjoying Lumix 9mm f/1.7 lens

Thank you for your post Isabel

I'm in real estate and went from Oly 12 mm f2 ( a very nice lens but not wide enough ) to Oly 4/3 9-18mm on E30 ( very good copy , sharp to the edges ) and then with adapter on Em1 , to finally the PL 8-18

The 8-18 is absolutely fine , although it has more distortion than the old 4/3 and even though it's corrected in jpegs , knowing it spoils the fun a bit of using a 800 euros lens . It has better micro contrast than the old 9-18 and overall a better rendering

Now I only use the wa zoom at between 8 and 10 ( I used to have the 4/3 11-22mm that I would use also only at 11 mm , lol ) and it never crosses my mind to go around and shoot at 15-18 for example, so it's pretty specialized

So when the 9 mm came out I thought that would be the solution, a fast prime with I assumed better sharpness than a zoom . But I have read some reviews that the 9 is lacking in the sharpness dpt . Looks good though from your photo .

What do you think, would you use it for regular interior shots like the one you posted ?

Thanks

You're welcome!

I see no lack of sharpness!  I think it's great for interiors.  Lots of depth of field at large apertures so you don't need any auxiliary lighting, and of course with the super stabilization in today's cameras, a tripod really isn't necessary.

I just took some pictures for you and after converting the raw images in DxO Photolab resized them down to 1050 pixels high.  I corrected the perspective with DxO Viewpoint on only one of them.  You can judge the sharpness for yourself.  I'm pretty sure I didn't apply any sharpening.

Perspective corrected with DxO Viewpoint.  There is normal wide angle stretching in the depth of the images as witnessed by the width of the appliances and fridge.

Shot with a mix of sunlight and ceiling fluorescents - no perspective correction.

No ceiling lights. just sunlight filtering through blinds. No perspective adjustment.

No perspective adjustment

These, and other examples posted here recently, go a long way to demonstrating how useful this lens is going to be!

For me, the elderly 9-18 Oly zoom is likely to get fewer outings.. with this 9mm + either 12/45 or 12/60 & perhaps the 15mm PL being all I'll need take on most city visits.

I guess we stills folk may well owe the video-shooters a hearty thank-you, for at last getting us all a decent, fast, wide-angle?

I might as well post a couple:

This is a high res picture of the inside of a religious institution that has sold its building and fairly soon will be demolished. Only the 9mm could capture all the stained class plus rows of seating.

Shot from across the street in Seaside Heights, New Jersey

The Seaside Heights shot was probably my first with the 9mm lens.

Re: If you are interested in architecture....

You might enjoy watching how the videographer of this video treats tall buildings, both inside and out.

I love Waldemar's videos on YouTube:.  They convinced me I needed to have a wider lens. https://youtu.be/ViJtn2tlVl8

A lot of these views are shot from way low, so a tilting monitor certainly comes in handy - especially for old knees.

Another thing I appreciate about this (and other) of these documentaries is the fact that times of day and impossible exposure problems are "as it was" and unconquerable - so blown out highlights and shadow areas without detail were inevitable and really didn't detract from the overall enjoyment.

Not too often do lens cause me much interest but this one does.

thank you to Isabel and the others for posting casual or “real world” pictures .

This lens should do well for me in museums or busy public places to share the energy or atmosphere of a place.
