CANON EF-S 10-22 usm autofocus only in one direction

Hi all,

Recently my daughter kicked my well-loved 10-22 lens to the floor. The autofocus stopped working properly (it moved a little and then stopped with a scratching sound. Shaking the lens would reveal something was loose or broken inside.

Given that my lens is 10 years old and canon repair are way way overpriced (charged me 400€ to repair a 70D that I fixed at home later on by just cleaning some connectors) I decided to repair the lens myself.

Opening it revealed that the loose piece was just part of the case, one of the screw spots.

After putting it back together, the autofocus was still not working. So I disassembled it again and cleaned the stator and rotor of the usm module.

I noticed that the rotor is a tiny bit loose but there’s nothing there to tighten it or that seems broken or out of place.

Once everything was back together the autofocus now works perfectly when going from infinity to close focus but gets “jammed” in the other direction

Full time manual focus still works and works well.

Could this be something electric? Maybe the piezo ceramic piece is not doing the right frequency for one of the directions?

Anyway, would be amazing to get some feedback from the forum. I’m sure this should be an “easy fix”

Thanks everyone!
