EF 135mm F2L USM - Which extender (1.4x or 2x)?

Hello

Considering an extender, hesitating btw 1.4x and 2x

  • My camera: 6D Mk i
  • Lens I would plug this extender onto: EF 135mm F2L USM

Any feedback appreciated, thx, Gaul

I have the 1.4x II version and it works pretty well on the 135L. That extender can be picked up quite cheaply these days. I've never tried other versions, but I would imagine the image quality and AF speed will take a big hit with the 2x.

Here's a couple of full size examples of image quality with the 1.4x. These were just test samples.

135/2.0 + 1.4 x vs 200/2.8

135/2.0 + 2x vs 300/4.0 IS

Perhaps you may find either of the primes at a decent price comparable to the extender?

Canon's Extenders 1.4X I and II are optically the same, so I'd go with price, I wouldn't recommend the 2X. For minimum IQ penalty with the EF 135 f/2 L, I'd suggest the 1.4X EF Extender III. The drawback with the Extender III is that it is compatible with fewer lenses.

1.4 is better quality than the 2x, mk1s we’re just ok, mk2s much better, mk3s we’re much more expensive but only marginally improved with coatings and cosmetic colour changes.

For your. 135 F2 I’d get the 1.4x mk2, I had it, sold it, regret it.
