The TikTok craze for the X100V is so confusing...

So I saw a post on Reddit's camera marketplace today where someone was selling their Sony A7RIII for an X100V, which is just absurd. I noticed that a few posts below it, there was an X100F for sale for $750...had been up for hours with nobody asking about it or buying it.

Do the people who see this on TikTok not research that there are several other X100 series cameras? Or Fuji has other cameras with the exact same sensor with an interchangeable mount?

It honestly baffles me...

Based on several videos I've seen that start with an influencer saying something along the lines of "so, check out this sleeper camera that's really flown under the radar" I would say you pretty much nailed it.

The X100v is as advertised. What is baffling about one of the most complete cameras ever made being popular? So what if people on TikTok love it. Hard core photo enthusiasts do as well as professionals. Hell Annie Leibowitz was spotted in a picture using one.

TIKTOK isn't what is making this camera popular, this camera being so damn good is what made it popular.

Also I would rather own an X100v over a Sony A7anything if I have to choose. Even my Current Fuji and Leica gear, the X100v would be the camera I kept if I could only have one.

don't get me wrong, I love my X100V. It's the first camera I've ever bought new immediately on release, and in the two years I've been shooting with it, my estimation of it hasn't dropped an inch. I'm with you, if I had to pick one piece of equipment to save from a house fire, the X100V would be it, no question.

but yeah, I think it's totally reasonable to posit that tiktok and the subsequent explosion of attention the camera is getting from the crowd of young film shooters who are bummed at climbing film prices and looking for a digital camera that mimics their favorite film stock colors is hugely responsible for the fact that fuji can't make them fast enough to keep them on the shelves. Fuji's been doing this for a while, do we think that they weren't prepared to handle the demand from an existing demographic? It's fair to say supply line problems factor into this, but the other half of the equation is almost certainly a surprise boost in sales from an unexpected market.

You're misunderstanding the psychology of consumer behaviour. If someone with influence on TikTok says the X100V is THE camera to own, then followers of that influencer will want that model and no other. Its not just about which sensor it has and which other cameras are available with the same sensor - that rationale is for photograph enthusiasts.

My camera dealer tells me that on the used market, the silver version of the X100V is selling for more than the black. I presume therefore that the TikTok influencer(s) in question own the silver version.

Its not just about the quality of the output, its about owning the latest must-have products for a certain group of people.

The X100V is a particularly striking camera. So its no wonder that those TikTok followers in question like to be seen carrying it. Its the only camera I own (silver version) that people comment to me on the streets "That's a beautiful camera".

X-Pro3 is sold out everywhere too now.

They have the same hybrid finder in common (as in, the very same part as far as anyone can tell), I imagine it’s shortages relating to that which is restricting supply vs demand.  Quite possibly they’re making less/no X-Pro3’s in order to fulfil the X100V orders.

I find it odd too, the X100V is fine but it’s not a new camera by any means, nor that amazingly different to the X100’s before it..

It's not absurd. If someone is making that trade then they never needed what the Sony could provide. Simple as that.

It is like telling someone, who wants to play a Fender Strat, that there are many guitars out there with just the headstock and/or body shape being slightly different and some of them even have fancy electronics the Strat doesn’t have. Or interchangeable pickups…

It is also completely crazy. x100v is a good/great compact camera, now it costs more than x-pro3, and that is completely insane. Only a fool can buy it now because it costs 5-600 dollars more than its real price.

Am I to assume I need to destroy the years and years of prints and “full frame” negatives made using a Summicron 35?
