It's logging GPS data, not so much points. It should hold a few days on this highest refresh setting. It will not roll over and you need the special Canon tool to delete existing logs. The whole process is very 1980s, don't expect any smarts or efforts to make it user friendly.

GPS data is points (coordinates) of where you have been.

Depending on the refresh rate, you'll get 4.5 days, if you use it 8 hours a day at a refresh rate of 1 second.
If you increase the time between position updates, you get longer operational time before the memory is full - up to 128 days.

The memory does indeed roll over. When its full, the oldest logs are forgotten.

You use Canon's GPS log file utility to access the logs. Pretty straightforward.

Re: Problems with GPS tagging with new version of camera connect (R5)

The new version seems to work pretty well with my R5.

I use GPS extensively, previously with the 5DIV and 1DXII, where of course it was built in. On a birding trip to Hungary, I spent an uncomfortable few hours in a culvert, waiting for a little owl to appear. I can guarantee that during that time I did not move more than an inch or two, as my aching joints attested, yet the GPS readouts cover an area with a diameter of about 200m!

The omission of built in GPS from the R series is a real retrograde step. Even if the app works, I do not always want to have my phone with me, especially in crowded streets (pick pockets / theft) or wildlife trips where it might easily get wet or otherwise be damaged.  I do hope they bring it back in future models.

if you sit in a culvert, then it sounds pretty likely that the GPS signals have trouble reaching you.

The omission of GPS isn't general to the R-series, though. The R3 has GPS, or I would not have bought it.
