There still seems to be a lot of angst on this topic, so I went back and looked at my copy again. It might have gotten a little louder after the firmware update, but I still have to put my ear all the way to the lens to hear it.

I made a recording with my iPhone and put it on OneDrive. I put the microphone right at the base of the lens, started the recording, turned the camera on, turned the camera off, and stopped the recording. The hissing or whirring sound you hear between 3 and 6 seconds is the lens. The clicking sounds at either end are the camera switch and aperture constriction.

Again, I have to put my ear right next to the lens to hear it. With my eye to the viewfinder it's barely audible at all.

Is this what you're hearing?

That’s OIS noise. I’ve heard it in one other camera, but not the Fujis.

I think that's the same sound. It's something I usually hear from a zoom camera lens (such as while autofocusing or turning on) but in this case it doesn't go away completely. I only just updated yesterday so my observations are limited, but I do notice that:

  1. It is more active when the camera just turned on. The first 10 seconds are the loudest.
  2. There are three different sounds - the sound of a tiny motor running (like the one in your video), constant vibrating (like a phone), and whirring (like the one in this video posted earlier https://youtu.be/Ia7Zb1VFJno ).
  3. Sometimes I can feel the lens make tiny vibrations especially when I am moving the camera.

To the others who have the same issue, are you experiencing any problems with its performance? How is it affecting the camera's battery life? I am curious if this is just a minor annoyance or something that should be taken seriously enough to not the use the lens until it gets fixed. I am afraid that if I keep using it like this that it might damage the lens (or even the camera).

I also made a post to Fujifilm's reddit about this issue;

https://www.reddit.com/r/fujifilm/comments/11m26tx/problematic_fujinon_1855mm_fw_update_v324/

Perhaps we can reach the right people there since Fuji's email "help" has been rather useless.
