Not sure but I imagine the old sensor design would not be expensive to re-produce.

Part of the problem would be that if it were redesigned as BSI and so on, the required pixel dimensions might limit the APS-C image size to no more than 10mp, keeping in mind that the original sensor has a front-side illuminated design, with maybe half the "pixel" area taken up by electronic components.

The more artistic color palette of the 1:1:1 Foveon really appeals to me, too.  An APS-C 1:1:1 BSI Foveon with L mount, at a price similar to the sd Quattro, would really appeal to me financially as well.

… Tom: The shame is that Sigma could easily design and update an industry leading fixed lens compact that slipped in a good sized jacket pocket- and produced images that are in a league above any other.

… But, they are desperate to produce an all-in-one camera, compromising everything to follow the path of every other camera manufacturer.

I ear you here. If the BSI can be applyed to a foveon ... then we are all good. Damn yes !

The real estate of the Foveon is particulary crowded for sure. But if they can implement BSI without too much drawbacks then we will probably have a very very potent camera.
