Re: Huntsman with hoverfly

The photo is very  good.  That is one reason I don't hurt huntsman spiders.

The fly looks like it is Family Tabanadae or March fly rather than a hover fly.  The antenna are the main clue but the mouth looks like a piercing type.

  • Thank you. I believe you are correct. I was too quick to identify the fly. Typical horse flies here are monstrous big buzzing biting things. But this does look like a smaller more delicate type of horsefly.

Re: Huntsman with hoverfly

Great picture of the fly.  The problem with Identification of flies is that there are 500,000 species that have been described and named so far.  It is believed that there could be that many more not eat found.

There are three types of antenna that flies can have.  Soldier flies and wasp mimic flies can have the antenna that yours has.  I don't know nearly enough to tell the difference.

I have never seen the one in this picture.  It is rather pretty.

Re: Huntsman with hoverfly

I had not seen  (noticed ?) one of these before. But there are now lots around my house.  Since they hover around flowers like hoverflies I simply identified them as such. But I found what I am pretty sure are pictures of this one identified as as march or horse fly as you suggested. The eyes are nice.
