R6 mark II review

Duade Paton have posted new R6 mark ii review in his youtube

some remark from his review :
- noticable AF improvement compared to R6
- bigger AF area when using f11 tele prime lens
- best rolling shutter performance for non stacked sensor
- some AF tips at the end of Video

overall its great camera

OK it’s a little faster. But consider : 1 millisecond is 1/1000 sec. We often photograph birds in flight at 1/2000th sec or 0.5ms to freeze the motion. So the tip of a bird’s wing will move 28 times as far during sensor readout using E-shutter compared to mechanical shutter closure. Of course this affects different parts of the wing depending on how it interacts with the line-by-line readout of the sensor. I think a 14ms readout will still show very significant rolling shutter artefacts and distortion.  The only complete answer is global shutter (whole sensor read out at the same time).

its not 100% accurate.

Even if you drop from 1/2000 to 1/1000 this doesn't mean the bird wing will be totally blurred.
in other words birds dont flap their wings 2000 times per second. Fastest birds flap their wings around 100t/sec.
Then the sensor read out is for the whole area of the sensor. How much time it needs to scan from top to bottom (or right to left, idk).

Unless the area we are talking about covers the whole frame, (it doesn't, it doesnt even cover the 1/100 of the frame), then sensor read out for that specific area is gonna be much much faster.

So all in all, its a very welcomed change and i believe e-shutter is usable in most scenarios.

That's not true. Mechanical shutters have rolling shutter too. The mechanical shutter doesn't completely open and close in 1/2000 second. There's a slit that travels across the frame. No part of the frame is exposed for more than 1/2000, but it takes much longer than that for the whole slit to cross the frame. That's why the flash synch speed is usually about 1/200 or 1/250.

Of course this affects different parts of the wing depending on how it interacts with the line-by-line readout of the sensor. I think a 14ms readout will still show very significant rolling shutter artefacts and distortion. The only complete answer is global shutter (whole sensor read out at the same time).

In the video, he addresses in detail rolling shutter around 16:28.  It's a non-issue save for VERY fast moving wings (he mentioned hummingbirds).  His entire testing of the R6II was done electronically @ 40 FPS, and again, save for very fast moving subjects, it's a non-issue for the most part according to Duade (the reviewer in the linked video).

Agreed, great review!  I love his AF suggestion of having an in camera focal distance, similar idea to what many long focal lens have.

What about rolling shutter on aircraft propellers ?  And at Takeoff power ?      Anyone tested that?

Yep - it's in the video.  He shoots drone propeller blades and there's significant rolling shutter.  So if hummingbirds in flight, drone/aircraft spinning propeller blades are your thing, then this isn't your camera.

Some nice updates on the mark ii. Love that you can now fully customize the q menu and can save video custom modes separate from photo

Rolling shutter warping is one issue but my main concern with the drone shot comparison he used is that there is noticeably more of this jagged/aliasing effect which often appears on the wingtips of fast-flying birds.

I described it on the R6 in this previous thread asking if there was a good way to remove these artifacts: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4659188#forum-post-66312937

I found that while the RAW file and in-camera JPEG has it, it wasn't always very obvious but DxO PureRAW was making it worse. On the other hand Topaz Denoise has a tendency to smear most of it of when you apply noise reduction.

Ah, that's interesting. I would have thought the smaller sensor of the R7 makes much faster readouts possible.

Re: R6 mark II review

Well I traded my R5 in for the R6II. Charging da battery. We shall see but I think I'll be OK. 45mp as a bit of overkill for I do. 30mp was sweet spot.

Given all else being equal, but they're not.  The R7 likely has slower processor and bus speeds.

Sorry about that. I mostly do web applications so 30mp gives me the best IQ with the least amount of work.

But the R6ii is 24MP, not 30.  I'm confused as well.

Not sure how to explain this any further but I will try.

I sold my 5D4 and EF 24-70 II and purchased an R and RF 24-105 f4. I really liked both those   30mp sensors for what I do, which is mostly for web applications. Excellent combo for urban photography.

Also for BIF. With my R, EF 100-400II and 2X.

When the R5 was announced I decided to get it and the 100-500. I ordered both at the same time. The lens came fist so I used it on the R for about about a month. I loved it.

Not so much with the R5. Nothing wrong with it but for what I do 45mp is overkill. Lower mp is just easier to work with for web display - for me.
