X-T5 bug causing freeze-up: Can X-T5 owners test/confirm?
7

Hi all, I've noticed a bug causing my X-T5 to freeze up occasionally, and just did some testing to narrow in on exactly what sequence of steps causes it. I sent an email to Fuji support, but I'm curious if others with an X-T5 could test as well and confirm if this is a general bug, and not just something with my specific camera.

The bug causes the X-T5 camera to completely lock up and become completely unresponsive. The only solution when this happens is to remove and reinsert the battery. The lock up happens every time when the exact steps are done:

1. Go to an item in the stills "My Menu" and change it. (The bug doesn't happen if no menu item is changed.)

2. Arrow-left on the directional pad to move the cursor out of the list of My Menu items, and onto the left-most list of menu categories.

3. Arrow-up to move to try to move to the Network/USB settings menu. The camera will not move away from the My Menu, but will instead freeze up and become unresponsive. Pressing buttons, waiting, or switching the camera off will have no effect. Only removing and reinserting the battery fixes it.

Anyone willing to check your X-T5 and confirm? If this is indeed a software bug affecting all X-T5 cameras, hopefully a fix will be in the first firmware update! Many thanks in advance.

I could not reproduce. On step 3 are you still in the context of adding something new to the menu? or does this happen when you just rearrange stuff?

Yes, this type of X-T5 freeze -up has happened to me, not every time, but frequently. Exactly as you describe when leaving My Menu. Removing and replacing the battery fixes the problem temporarily. This is definitely a bug and a fairly significant one.

Just tested and no problem here. Changed an item twice and went back tot eh left-hand menu then up, past connection settings. All is fine so far.

I have 7 My Menu items so have done this a few times but will keep my eye open for it.

For me, the freeze up is happening immediately after visiting My Menu to change a setting (not to add, remove, or reposition a My Menu item).

After changing a setting in My Menu, the freeze happens when I press the left arrow to return to the tabs in the left column (where "MY", "IQ", "AF/MF" etc icons are located). The D-pad selector arrows become frozen and the on/off switch is inoperable. Removing the battery is the only fix that I've found. I have 2 pages of My Menu settings.

Yes, same problem here. While in my menu making changes, then trying to leave, it froze and was unresponsive. It has happened three times so far. I just open the battery cover, quickly pop battery up and down, back in service. A bug that definitly needs a fix.

Nope, didn't cause a freeze for me.

I went into My Menu, changed my first item (AUTO ISO) from mode 3 to mode 2, went back to main menu, went up to network settings, no issues.

I'll tell you what I do think is a serious issue though - not being able to access My Menu with one click of the MENU button. Apparently this is a new feature and entirely by design. I hate it.

I confirm that happened to my X-T5 as well. Fuji Germany said it's "hardware" error which i did not believe. Anyhow, got my cam swapped and the new one shows exactly same freeze like you described it, by switching between menus around "MY"

Agree.  They should make this an option for My Menu.  Either always go to My Menu, OR have it “go to the last place you were.”  Seems to me this could be an easy firmware change.

Tried this on my X-T5 and the arrow keys fully operate as would be expected.  Could be a conflicting config setting you've enabled; have you tried restoring the camera to default factory settings?  A pain but it might get you closer to a solution or explanation.

Ok, I’ve managed to reproduce it and have a work around 🤓

I can only recreate the issue if I have 2 pages of items in “ My Menu” If it’s one page of items then the problem doesn’t occur.

I followed the steps by changing an item and going back to the left menu where it appeared to lock.

pressing buttons didn’t do anything like others have reported, however if I look through the EVF, (I have this activated) then this appears to unlock the menu and I have normal operation again.

Compared to my XT3 which I also tested, the navigation speed does seem more sluggish on the XT5

I seriously doubt that this is a hardware issue as one person was told by Fuji Germany.

For those who have tested above positively or negatively, I’d be interested if you could re-test and advise.

I agree, The whole point of the My Menu is to have your most-used settings available quickly.

While Fuji are at it, maybe they can add the 'double-click to centre' function back for the focus lever

Just added an extra item so I have two pages and retested. No fault found. I switched the camera off/on before retesting and changed items on page 1 and page 2 to make sure. All fine.

Thanks Dave,

Interesting.....

If I have 3 items its fine, 2 pages its a problem.

What I have noticed now though is it if it locks, I just wait around 60 seconds then the menu is accessible again. So nothing to do with the EVF as I originally thought.

Seems like its processing in the background.

There is definitely a sluggishness when you move from My Menu to Connections which doesn't exist on the X-T3 so maybe this is just a code issue that needs an update.

Is there a way to report bugs to Fuji or request features like you can with Apple?

Agreed, I think people need to email Fuji Tech Support to get traction on this.

I've contacted them in the UK

Figured out exactly the same working solution after resetting my 2nd T5 and putting all settings back in manually.

Ah I misinterpreted the steps then. I was able to change a lot of settings but eventually could reproduce the bug. I have also noticed that menu navigation is more laggy than I'm used to from my T2 & H1. Hopefully they will have a firmware fix eventually.
