Photo Mate R3 - very rubbish editor.

First when I installed this app I thought finally an advanced image editor for android phone or tablet so don't need to use PC when traveling, however after brief use I trashed the app.

Here is why:

1. Stacking files with most options creates images with artifacts, only scheme worked for me is remove moving objects.

2. After stacking or panorama from RAW files it does not let you export 16 bit tiff, exports only 8 bit tiff which is not much better than exporting JPEG. Thus future editing with Photoshop/Lightroom android versions is impossible. Only can edit merged RAW's in 16bit mode using R3 itself, however its impossible.

3. Masks are useless. If I set exposure to lowest value for entire image, I can clearly see sky show up from pure white overexposed area. However when i use gradient filter and set exposure only for filtered area it only makes sky darker shade of white.

4. Internal editing e.g. exposure adjustment is sluggish compared to Lightroom android.

Guess list could get bigger if I decided to use this app, but away it goes.

The align mostly does not work. So it's tripod only.

The light compression mode looks bad.

The Eagle images Stacker gives you 16bit Tiff and png. The dynamic range is so huge that even in LR you can't move the sliders enough.

There is one more plus for Eagle images Stacker. It seems to be doing some kind of color shading artifacts removing.

But all things considered, R3 is still one of the best in Android. There is nothing like Gimp or Photoline on android.

LR can't read from memory card. R3 can. LR can't save PNG, R3 can.

I wish R3 had blend mode where you can custom define color range not to include into average blending, so you can skip the pure white and or black.

If you have red street light beeing pure white on 9 exposures out of 11, it will average to white.

Tried tody Photomate R3 again to only find more flaws. The wy R3 processing RAW files is flawed as well - RAW images are too low cotrast, foggy when loaded in R3.

This are JPEGs are saved with 80% quality from Photomate R3 & Lightroom Mobile without any adjustments done, image also looks the same once loaded inside app.

Photomate R3

Lightroom Mobile

P.S. Another thing I dont like about R3 is interface it looks very outdated like android v3 apps.

Hi and thanks for your feedback, I'm the developer of this app.

Most of the points are valid. Adobe has a huge library of color profiles and nails the look after converting raw pretty good. It's not too easy to replicate that, especially since it often even varies on a per camera basis. Not to mention they're probably having a huge team behind it.

The interface was designed back in the day with tablets in mind, but they are less and less common in the android space. Also, I didn't overhauled it since android 9 or so since the app is now only a free time project.

Best regards

Torsten
