***Mini Challenge #720 – Warmth With Snow ***
4

Warmth, both physical and emotional.

An example of physical, is warmth of a cozy room with a beautiful snowy view of yard or street at the window. And the emotional one can be again this warm room, but this time with warmth of "sweet home" in heart. Or a loving family walking in a snowy street. And of course Christmas is one hundred percent compatible with both of these!

This MC will end at 12:30 AM Central US Time on Tuesday, November 26, 2022 (6:30 AM UT, Tuesday November 27).

Some examples (not mine):

Challenge Rules:

The host gives you a topic and you post up to three images that fit. Remember, it's all about fun, sharing, and learning. Any picture you have taken in person is eligible, regardless of the time taken, camera, or post-processing used. The host chooses the winners and honorable mentions and posts those in a new thread. The host's decision is final. The winner of this challenge then hosts the next challenge, judges the winner of that one, and so on it goes. The winner of this challenge will have 48 hours to post the next challenge. If that doesn't happen, 2nd place will have 24 hours to do so, then it's up to 3rd place.

Submission Posting Guidelines:

Post each one of your three submissions in its own reply to this post. Give each post a unique Subject, please. It is best to embed an image in its post rather than linking to somewhere else. Feel free to post photos "for exhibition only" if you want to share more than three, or won't be available to host the next challenge. Try to preserve the EXIF please, so we can see which camera, lens, and settings were used.

Comment Posting Guidelines:

Feel free to post comments on the images or ask for comments. Don't hesitate to click on the green "Like" thumb on the top right of the post, so we know which images were most popular. Likes are appreciated as much as constructive criticism is. The host can make up his or her own mind without being influenced by that. I wish you all "good luck" and let's see some interesting pics.

That's a very creative topic, it'll be interesting to see what's submitted. Unfortunately I have zero snow shots and living in the deep south US, there won't be any.

This is going to be a difficult challenge for me to enter; like Len, we get very little snow.

I'll have a look though.

An interesting and tough challenge I must say. As Len and Dunlin said, I too live in a balmy climate, Southern California, though we have the luxury of living near some 12,000’ mountains if we choose to visit the cold and snow. These mountains are about 50 miles distant, and at my age are about as close as I choose to be, lol. This was taken about 10 days before Christmas last year.

I'm not sure I understand this request... (other than the closing date is weird)...

Why is the MC canceled and requested to be deleted?

Mike,

I don't think the Challenges are very popular.

Typically, they seem to get 10-15 entries at best, while the "Show Your Snaps" thread gets 40-60 entries.

I think the Challenge threads introduce a level of stress for both the participants and the judges. We all like to take pictures and share them with other people, showing interesting places we've been and interesting things we've seen; but people seem to shy away from being judged on what they share.

The Challenge thread seems to be a feature of the Canon forums. I looked around and it seems like the Nikon forum is the only other forum to have them. They seem to get 40-50 entries at a time.

Perhaps the Challenge thread could be replaced by a Theme thread, where people could be encouraged to submit photos based on a given theme, without any judging involved.

Interesting thought Steve.

The Sony cyber shot forum has a weekly challenge and gets a lot of entries and and a lot of exhibits.

That would make sense. Interestingly enough I recently asked if anyone would be interested in a weekly photo sharing thread on the next "higher-end" canon DSLR forum, the "Canon EOS 7D / 10D - 90D Talk" forum, and the answer was pretty much a unanimous "no".

If you've checked all the Canon forums you will probably have seen the CICs (Canon Image Challenges) on the aforementioned forum. They're sorta like mini-challenges. Members upload their photos (on a separate website) and after 3 weeks or so everyone judges, using a spreadsheet on Google Sheets. Then the winner is announced back here at DPR, and announces the next CIC and prepares the next one.

I know it sounds pretty complicated, but, perhaps we could try something like that (with the images hosted in a DPR thread of course). I'd be happy to co-ordinate it.

-

Then again your suggestion is probably best (simplicity is key).

D o n,

One Theme I saw recently was "Letters of the Alphabet", e.g shoot something that starts with the letter "A", etc.

apple, astronaut, alfalfa

"B"

brown, Boston, bliss,  burnt.

Another Theme was "Things you cannot see".

static electricity, wind, heat.

Another one was "Colors"

Shoot something red, etc.

I had the same idea about the starting letter.  Don

I don’t really have any suggestions other than simplicity is probably best, but I’ll go along with whatever is decided.

Re: ***Mini Challenge #720 – Warmth With Snow ***

Participation has indeed fallen off quite a bit. For example, Sue Anne Rush used to participate a lot but I've not seen anything from her in months.

In a larger sense that's normal. I was once a member of a Yahoo group called Digital Rebels (before YGs went belly up). In the late 2000s we had weekly challenges, our own year's four best images, etc. But there was no judging involved, just peer critique and commentary. It was a lot of fun while it lasted.

I agree the key to survival here will be simplicity. I have to say the current situation is a bit unexpected but I guess through a consensus we can do what we want. I don't know if the MCs have (had) an 'owner' in any sense, who should be involved in the decision making. I'm not pushing anything, just wondering.

From a participation standpoint, my challenge is to just shoot...

Unfortunately, Sue Ann was banned by the admin for questionable behaviour, which is why she isn't here any more.

To my knowledge (since 2009-10), the MC's in this sub-forum have never had an owner, this forum is yours as a group to do what you want with (as long as you keep by the rules). If the current users would like to change the format, it's up to you.

Well said Len!

My main thought is that we'll all be too polite; nothing may happen for quite a while. In a way it would be better to have a bossy owner who takes charge...

-

Things are even worse for MCs over on the Powershot forum. I agree it's probably time for a change.

If we change the MCs to something a bit too general and easy it may overlap with the weekly sharing threads run by Digramme, and that would be a real shame.

My $ 0.02 ...or € 0.019, or £ 0.016, or ¥ 2.73

Keep it simple but not simplistic. That is, have a single theme per challenge but make it interesting. Not unattainable (e.g., blue Ferraris), just interesting. For example:

  • School buses / transport
  • Water tanks / towers
  • Night time clouds
  • Non-green plants (pretty much anything right now LOL)
  • Flat open horizons
  • Water faucets

...although all things concerned we need to be cognizant of not creating challenges to shoot anything that might be mistaken as illegal, questionable, etc., in a social or legal context.

Anyway, you get the picture. I'm not proposing these as actual possibilities, just ideas. Also I'm not necessarily advocating changing anything, again just offering ideas. Looking at them now, these are all objects, but they could also be more conceptual.

However I do like the idea of a theme / challenge that has no 'verdict' other than feedback from viewers (which I would encourage as a gentle 'requirement' of the challenge).

Just rambling...
