L mount to SA converter?

I was looking around and was not able to find such a converter, did I miss anything. I am looking to buy the 100-400 DN L mount lens so I can have some future proofing and still be able to use it on my older sigma bodies. Am I out of luck?

Thanks for the input.

If I reember correctly it is a "one way street" - SA lens to L mount camera.

It is a tough job living in Hawaii but somebody has to do it.

That is definitely correct. My SA mount lenses work OK on L mount (although the adapter is expensive).

I can't see much likelihood of the L mount lenses being adaptable to anything, although there is a set of extension tubes available.

On the other hand, you can adapt almost anything to an L mount camera body.

That lens was made at least 50 years ago, but it's completely at home on the fp.

F_Henriques,

Converting L mount or any mirrorless to SA  or any DSLR is not possible.

SA or any DSLR lens to L  or any mirrorless mount is.

I'm sure some smart adapter company will make one. It shouldn't be all that difficult, though the optics will probably degrade the image quality a little bit.

Ditto to all the replies.  Never going to happen as the SA Mount is dead to Sigma.  On the opposite end, I had a SA lens to L mount adapter when I used with the Leica SL bodies.  In my experience, one is better off with native lenses through and through.

The flange depth of the Sigma SA mount is 44mm. For the L mount it's 20mm.

So with a simple adapter (i.e. without extra optics) you can use SA mount lenses on the L mount but not the other way round:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flange_focal_distance

L mount lenses could in principle be adapted, e.g., to the Nikon Z mount with its 16mm flange depth.

No, your not missing a thing. It can't be done, what I decided to do was run two systems

One a L mount with a MC-21 adapter SA to L and a L mount with one or two lenses. Not all my SA mount lenses work a 100% but they do work.

I am looking to buy the 100-400 DN L mount lens so I can have some future proofing and still be able to use it on my older sigma bodies. Am I out of luck?

Yep, your SOL sorry to say. A way around is get a adapter for any lens mount to the L mount and use them manually. I have the F mount to L mount and a M mount to L and and a Minolta AF mount to L and they work fine no issues. Cost me $28.00

Thanks for the input.

Good luck

You're "sure". Why?

Where's your evidence that it's possible? It's not, BTW.

No doubt, if you have unlimited money.

It is possible, like the adapters for Nikon or Exakta to K mount. The optics of these do degrade the image quality considerably.

Sigma could probably make a high quality adapter with optics to work with a specific lens. They would sell three or perhaps four copies.

If you want to use a lens on both, get the SA mount version, if there is one.

Ok, it's possible but difficult and impractical.

Have you seen the amazing variety of adapters out there? There seems to be some new adapter available every day. These people are amazing, and keep coming up with new products that I've never seen or even thought of before. THAT's why.

Where's your evidence that it's possible?

Evidence? Isn't every adapter evidence that one can use an adapter to adapt a lebs with one mount to a camera with another mount?

Here's an example of an adapter with lenses in it, which allows a lens designed for a short flange distance to work with a camera that has a longer flange distance:

https://fotodioxpro.com/products/m42-nkf-p-gls?_pos=57&_sid=653b1ac72&_ss=r

It's not, BTW.

Why not?

Put a mount on an adapter with a couple of lenses in it, and use the exact same wiring and contacts the MC21 has in it, but it would be arranged the opposite direction, so the SA mount camera could actually auto-focus, using the L mount lens.

WONDERFUL! Right?

If I seem to be missing something, please let me know what I don't seem to understand.

Have you used any of those lens adapters with glass in ?

The results are well below the image quality we expect from Sigma.

There's no point in buying a special camera that gives very high resolution, and then inserting poor quality optics between the lens and the camera.

Re: L mount to SA converter?

As a follow-up question, as the design construction of the new DN version of the lens on the sigma website is updated, do you reckon I would be losing much by opting for the older version? Does anyone have experience with both lenses?

I really appreciate any input you can provide. Cheers.

Some of the DG HSM lenses are still very new and relevant — the 40mm, 105mm, 28mm being the latest, and 70mm macro, and perhaps 135mm and 85mm just before them (see DPReview’s lens timeline).

The SLR Art lens designs are always optically-corrected whereas mirrourless versions sometimes are not.

The SLR Art lens designs are mechanically-focussing which can be an ergonomic advantage for certain use-cases.

Ostensibly, wide-angle mirrourless lenses gain the most in terms of performance and miniaturisation; telephoto lenses less so.

Remember that Sigma can convert SA lenses to L-mount and SLR-design L-mount lenses to SA-mount.

P.S. Short-flange lenses can be adapted to long-flange mounts, but only for close framing with no infinity and no electronic control (though Novoflex have electronic systems for reverse mounting macro etc). The only theoretical adaptor for L-mount to a shorter-flange would be to Nikon Z, but the user-base is insufficient to motivate this.
