Last chance to buy M?!
5

After weeks of aggressive discounts, seems like the inventory is depleted.

11-22, 32 1.4, 55-200, and other lenses and packages are all “Backorder” now.

grab whatever you need while you can.

I’ve got as a backup: 2 M6ii, 11-22, and 32 1.4.

Re: Last chance to buy M?!

I read here a lot about people buying backup bodies because of the current M situation.

I have never had a camera die under my ownership but y'all made me think about also buying another one of my favourite bodies sooner or later. All my M lenses would be useless with no working camera body...

But I was asking myself is there any 'passive wear' if you just store a camera body??

Re: Last chance to buy M?!

My 12 YO D90 and 5YO D500 works like new.

I got defensive after having a whole camera bag stolen in San Fransisco couple years ago, and recently having a 11-22 going bad mid trip to Yellowstone.

Keeping a charged battery in a stored camera would be prudent. An alternative to storage alone would be to periodically use the body for some light duty.

I have 5 M bodies. The oldest (orig. M & an M2) are essentially in storage but I keep a charged battery in each and try to shoot a few images monthly - just to keep things going. The remaining 3 - M50, M6II, and M6II (silver) - I still use and keep a different lens on each one. This is especially convenient when shooting an event, travel, etc. since I'm not constantly changing lenses.

I also have several other Canon digital bodies dating back 20+ years. Some show a bit of wear and have higher shutter counts but all still work.  I still use my 6D frequently and it never disappoints.

FWIW, I haven't experienced a Canon body or lens failure yet and I've owned Canon's since film days.  OTOH, I've had several failures of point 'n' shoot digital cameras - none were Canon.

Can I ask why?  I guess I've always just taken the battery out  because I've had alkaline batteries corrode in gadgets.

I am planning on dusting off my 1985 film camera and see if it works, I don't think so.

Keeping a fully charge battery in it and using it now and then should keep the internal cmos battery in good health.

It didn't really matter until some genius thought it was a good idea to make the battery inaccessible and not user serviceable.

Battery is not alkaline.  Even so check the battery monthly;  better still, shoot a dozen images once a month to keep everything working

Re: Last chance to buy M?!

The 32 1.4 is the last lens missing in my collection. I'm still undecided though if Canon 32 or Sigma 30 or wait for RF 50 1.4 (which might never happen) and get an RP for the ultimate FF alround combo...

So at the moment I'm just keeping an eye out for an additional cheap M50 mk ii body, used or new.

I'm considering the Sigma EF fit 30mm F1.4 ART. I can use it with either of my M or Eos R cameras. It's not really for full frame, but according to Chris Frost's review, it will cover the FF image circle without vignetting too badly once stopped down to F2.8.

Makes sense.  Thanks!

I went through some similar thinking recently, and like you, the 32mm f1.4 was the only “must have” lens missing from my M collection.  The recent price drop to $399 pushed me over the edge on that decision.

Regarding the “second body” issue, I like having a 2nd body as a backup and to provide the ability to have a 2nd lens immediately available.  So a year or so ago, I got an M5 on sale as a backup to my M6 II.  I like the M5 for its built-in EVF, but otherwise it has not been an ideal companion body because its controls and capabilities differ from that of the M6 II, which I have found very frustrating.  For that reason, I just ordered a refurb M6 II from Canon at the attractive price of $549, to give me 2 identical bodies.

Getting the same body you like the most twice is a good idea imo. If my camera really dies one day I want to have the same one as a replacement. Also muscle memory is a thing and Canon loves changing the button layout on every camera, at least a little.

I also have my old M10. It is nice with the 22 F2. But with the outdated AF and missing bulb I wouldn't be happy with it as my only M.

Dangit, Canon why you have to kill M? APS-C RF stuff will never be as small... I guess...
