Bought an R6 Mk ll today
6

I asked a local (Wellington, New Zealand) camera store a couple of days ago if they were expecting any Mk ll's and they let me know that they had ordered 4, but would probably receive only one. Today (Monday 28th Nov., '22) I heard that they had a kit with an RF 24 - 105 f4.0 that they were happy to remove the lens from & sell me as body only.

I had previously bought a few EOS bodies from the same store ( EOS D60, 20D, 5D, 6D, 80D, R & R6) and as I've been shooting progressively more & more video work compared to photography, I decided that the removal of the 30 min video limit, auto focus improvements as well as the wifi improvements justified the purchase.

So far my only notes on the new camera are that it fits in the same Small Rig body cage that the R6 fits in, the photos and video captured with the same profiles seem to match well between R6 & R6 Mk ll, and it seems to have the same annoying HDMI output settings when in video mode, that don't allow an image to be seen on both the camera's LCD screen & the external monitor at the same time.

I believe that if you're recording video to an external monitor/recorder (like an Atomos Ninja V), then it will display an image on both the LCD & monitor. I was desperately hoping (but not expecting) that the new body might return to the ways of the EOS R that allowed images to be viewed on the camera and monitor - which was great. It is possible with the R to still have things like tap to focus and touch control of menu items on the LCD while still having the advantage of a large monitor.

When shooting stills I generally connect to an iPad via wifi and use an app called Shuttersnitch to display image previews. This has worked very well since the EOS 6D (& I tested the Eye-Fi wireless SD card previously), but with each new generation of Canon camera the connection process seems to get better and better, so I'm looking forward to testing the new connection capabilities - including the new 'wired' connection which may prove useful.

Lots of testing to perform before my first client work with the Mark ll.

Thanks for the welcome - I've been a follower of the DPR forums for a long time and very pleased for the collective knowledge & experience.

Haha - I'm not sure that I've been 'first', but I guess it is very early days for this new model, so I'm happy to share anything that may be of interest. Cheers.

Oh man I was ready to upgrade my EOS R to R6 II but this changes everything. Sorry just trying to understand it so with external monitor attached to R6 II camera LCD shuts off??? How do you change focus?

thanks in advance

Yes - I have been hoping for a firmware update or a work-around to get the monitor function to replicate the way that the R behaves when using the HDMI port… but so far no luck.

I haven’t found it too difficult to work with so far - the focus point can be moved with the joy stick and I’m mostly using manual focus for video…. but there are certainly occasions when I would like both monitors to be on (facing the camera monitor towards the subject, etc.). I’m considering buying a recorder/monitor so I can have that functionality returned.

The menu setting for the HDMI options gives the option to have signal going to both monitors, but it’s not possible to record to the card in the camera while this setting is on… I have no idea why, but it is the same as with the R6.

First thanks a lot for quick response.
I’m so puzzled with this decision on Canon’s part. Even R lets you use both. I’m also surprised that there’s almost no talk about this. I don’t think Sony or Panasonic are approaching this the same way. I’ll have to check.
Thanks again

Re: Bought an R6 Mk ll today

Most panaonic cam can do hdmi out while recording internally and monitor display, Sony one is mostly to the newer cam, older cams like a7iii turn off lcd screen when doing 4k, a6x00 series turn off lcd screen when recording

Canon so far only Eos R and R5 can do internal recording + lcd +hdmi out which is really annoying as livestream getting more popular, one way to counter is get external monitor with both hdmi in and out port to get over the blank internal screen situation.

Thanks. This saves me a lot of time. I just thought since R has it, R6 II would be much better with this and not not have it at all. For majority of video shoots manual focus is much better option but sometimes.... Changing ships is expensive proposition so I have to see if R5 is better solution for me.

Btw, how do you find manual focusing/peaking on R6 II? It's not the easiest thing to do on R.

Re: Bought an R6 Mk ll today

A very successful option for the HDMI out is to use a phone or tablet with native USB C. The updated Canon Camera Connect app allows USB C functionality with the Mk 2 as well as Wi-Fi and this works very well - in my case using an iPad Pro 11" connected to the R6 2 when shooting video (works with stills as well).

This allows a very nice preview on the iPad with almost no lag, stop/start button and exposure controls, PLUS tap to focus, double tap to magnify AND having the camera LCD screen fully operative as well (unlike with HDMI signal out).

I think an iPad mini would be an ideal size to mount on the camera itself but I mount my iPad off to one side with a fitting that allows it to be clamped to a light stand or tripod.

I'm not sure, but I would think this should all be possible with Android devices.

That’s very interesting option. Shame there’s no iPad app with usual exposure/focus/lut features. At least there wasn’t any last time I looked.
Thanks
