Canon eos-m. I cleaned sensor. Camera died

I could not have been more disappointed.

I had a Canon eos-m. Original model.

I was very careful with the camera. Not a drop of water. Not a blow, even light one.

In fact camera had just a few months of use, believe it or not.

I was messing with the settings when I clicked "clean the sensor" setting.

Bang.

Camera died.

It shut down and does not turn on.

Very disappointed.

Does anyone have any idea how, if, can be, repaired?

I could hardly be more dissapointed

Not a single scratch.

My camera dead. Not single scratch. Almost brand new since I kept it stored years. ( I have another one)

It seems unlikely to me that it’s really dead. Make sure the battery is fully charged, or try another battery.

It can't be something serious. Your battery was charged? Take it out wait a minute put it again and try again. Take out also the card.

Hmm.  Check the little microswitch under the battery door (that signals that the door is shut).  Try manually depressing it and turning it on.

Best of luck to you!

That's very sad.   I'm not sure it's worth sending away for a repair - in Europe or North America the second-hand value is equivalent to less than 4 hours of skilled labour with on-costs, never mind parts.

There's a chance it could be the battery, as your original model is 8-10 years old.  The battery could be on its last legs if it's been stored discharged for years. The LP-E12 battery is still current, it powers the EOS M200, so it's worth borrowing one from a friend or seeing if your local camera shop will let you try one before you buy.

It's dead. I have another camera exactly the same, as backup. Backup camera does work with battery but when I placed battery in screwed camera, camera does not turn on. Dead.

I just select clean now sensor. Picture is from back up.

I swear I speak the truth. I had 2 eos-m.

Suddenly bang.

Not the battery. Battery works perfectly in my back up eos-m. I had 2 of them. Camera died in the moment I choose clean sensor. It was gone

If anyone has a contact mail I would be grateful. Anyway eos-m has not support. It cannot be repaired.

Incredible. I bought the camera in 2013, as far as I remember.

You press a setting, camera does die.

I have Canon point and shoot that still works. Canon sx220hs.

I have Ricoh r9 that still works. Camera from 2008.

It was the more expensive less used eos-m , that died. Less used since I usually used another one.

Re: Canon eos-m. I cleaned sensor. Camera died

In cañón europe I was informed that support for the camera is finished. No more repairs.

In us Canon support the lady does ask me credit card number and zip code to forward problem to technician.

Since I live outside usa and no PayPal, another door closed.

In my view I am fully entitled to a eos-m camera. I did nothing wrong. I kept camera with great care. Camera had only a few months of use since I usually used a second one.

(that works).

If anyone could give me an e-mail Canon support, it would be appreciated.

If I loose the camera, most likely outcome, people should read this story.

Its a true story.

*before going to sleep take out the battery and try again next day.

Thank You. I am trying the sleeping trick. Let the camera sleep without battery, without card, without lenses.

Let's see how it goes.

Anyway it is sad they did discontinued eos-m line. It was short lived.

I guess it was because cell phones. They completely crush the camera market.

Very sad.

Thanks for the tip.

I had a similar experience with a M6 converted to infrared.  Lifepixel did the conversion, which also disables the sensor clean capability.  Lifepixel forgot to tell me not to re-enable the sensor clean option in settings.  After receiving the converted camera, I reviewed the settings and ignorantly turned the sensor clean option back on.

I contacted Lifepixel and after some discussion they told me to try turning the camera on and immediately hit the menu button.  They also said it may require repeating the process several (or numerous) times to get the menu to display.  Once displayed, turn the sensor clean option back off.  In my case it took about a dozen tries to get the menu to display.

I know this is not the identical situation, but it might be worth a try!

Thank you very much for that trick. I will try it also.

In my case I just choose option clean sensor now.

Incredible how such reputable camera maker does not check all the  settings before launching product.

Disappointment is a under statement.

Camera was new since I did it keep it stored years.

I bought it first hand and it worked fine for months.

Further disappointment is that they do not repair camera and to acess service customer in the us one has to transfer to them 1 buck. One has to provide credit card number, or PayPal wich I do not have.

Probably because fixing it costs more than just sending a new one, which from environmental point of view literally sucks.

My oldest in active usage camera is my M6 mk I, it is from 2017.

My M3 from 2015 is in little less active usage but it gets used from now and then and I try to keep them with fully charged battery at all times.

Even the box in great condition.

I tried to connect camera to pc. Camera does not power on.

I tried the trick power + menu, 20, 30 times, won't work.

When  I insert battery  no reaction from camera unlike a functioning eos-m that does a sound.

Check just in case with a flash light the contacts for the battery in the camera. Put little alcohol on the tip of a cotton we use for ear cleaning and with attention clean the contacts. One never knows.

The other thing is to put a charged battery inside the camera and check again after few days like the person on the other thread.

Re: Canon eos-m. I cleaned sensor. Camera died

I have never had a canon digital camera fail. My sx10 from 2008 is my grandson's  camera now and works as it always  has. My sx40 performs like new also and with the original battery from 2011. My sx 230 has many  thousands of shots and is still used regularly.. The only thing that happened  with the sx230 was the little claw that holds the battery in broke off-but it isn't necessary anyway as the door holds it in place. Then there was the A 1200 or 1100 that was stolen . I hope that one died , hopefully in a fireball. My fuji finepix 2800 zoom from 2001 died as well as my  minolta DiMage A1 from 2003 also bit the dust too but the old canons keep on keeping on.

Exactly. I have the elph 500 hs, and the sx220 hs.

They work fine. Point and shoot.

Look at the picture of them  I took now.

My 2 cameras.

That's why I was surprised with the sudden demise of the eos-m
