memory cards for Canon R5C / R5
1

Hey i just ordered an R5C! Now i need memory cards. I understand it has one slot for CFExpress and one normal SD card. I intend to buy an Angelbird 512mb Cfexpress card for one slot which will only be used for 8k video. The other slot i will use only for photos (i only do timelapses so no need for fast burst speeds or anything). So my question is can i use these SD cards as I already have 6 of them so would be good to be able to keep using them

No real need to separate the two.  I’d just dump everything to the nice fast CFe card (my personal pref is the Sony Tough).

Hi barnyz,

Welcome to the Canon EOS R Talk Forum!

I have an R5 and a number of these cards (64GB variant). Providing you're not going to be going completely nuts with bursts (which you say you're not) they will work absolutely fine.

(I've never had a problem even with bursts - though I keep these short and to the point!).

Just remember that if you're ever writing to the two cards simultaneously, the camera defaults to the speed of the slower card.

I don't know if there are any caveats with writing separately (if both cards are installed).

Congrats on the new camera, I'm sure you will love it.

One note, I seem to remember a thread a while back about some cards causing the R5 to wake up more slowly, sometimes causing it to take 20 seconds or more to reawaken. I don't think it was linked to the read/write speed necessarily, but something to do with just some brands/types causing some issues. Maybe someone more familiar with the issue can remember?

Cheers Mike

Hi barnyz,

Just to clarify, my R5 starts up just as quickly with my 170MB/s UHS-I cards as it does with my 300MB/s UHS-II cards - both being SanDisk Extreme PRO.  (ie. It’s not an issue for me).

I should also add my R5 has never suffered from lock-ups under any f/w version I’ve used.

If you're not shooting bursts your current SD cards will be 100% fine. Even if you do shoot bursts, you will be able to shoot at full speed until the buffer fills - the only penalty will be a long wait for the buffer to clear for the next shot/burst.

My worry would be that if you specifically want to shoot 8K video, one 512 MB CFexpress card might not be enough. Again the above link has the data.

Very early on there was an issue with Angelbird cards IIRC.  The issue was addressed pretty quickly...

My own preference is the Sony Tough, but I've also used Sandisk Extreme Pros forever and love them too.

Hi, thanks, it's good to know. It's going to take me some time to adjust to a totally new camera system so the less problems the better

That's super helpful link thanks. I have booked marked it. Hmm looks like sd cards can do more than I thought on this camera.

Yep I know the one card won't be enough and I expect I will order another one or two as soon as I verify that everything else is working as expected.

Remember you can always use the CFE performance for everything and then in camera copy onto your slower SD cards - effectively using them as memory and freeing up the CFE.

hey, thanks. I will need to look that up as well. I got the camera today and as a long time sony user i am somewhat baffled by canons menus and buttons at the moment. its going to take me a very long time to learn what everything does.

I did not manage to work out how to set one card to one thing and the other to something else yet as video and stills menus are totally separated on the r5c and most info i found on youtube is for the normal R5 so your tip sounds like a great work around.

Still lots of learning to do!!!

Don’t worry once you start to use you’ll find it all makes sense. Setting up the custom modes and menus really helps.

I would go with cf express cards and only v90 SD cards, especially if you want to do burst shooting. You'll clear your buffer out faster and it'll allow you to transfer files to your computer much faster. In a 5-10 min session, I shot about 1,300 photos of birds and the R5 dumped the buffer super fast. Never underestimate fast media!

Re: memory cards for Canon R5C / R5

hi again

so i now have my r5c + cards. When in photo mode menus I believe I have set up the cards to record raw photos to the SD card which is fine... but it still forces me to use the CFexpress as well, there does not seem to be an option to ignore that card for photos. At the moment ive set it to only record the small size jpegs to the cfexpress so at worst i can just constantly delete these but ideally i want it to only put photos on the SD card when in photo mode.

Also when viewing files using the play button on the back of the camera is there any way to tell what memory card a file is on or switch between the two so i can be sure im deleting the correct files?

thanks and sorry if these are dumb questions. im 100% new to Canon and still learning the ropes.
