New Canon Neural Network Image Processing Tool 1.0
3

"Neural Network Image Processing Tool is a high quality processing tool for Digital Photo Professional. It can be used by subscribing to a paid plan. Using image processing algorithms based on deep learning technology, it can apply newly developed Digital Lens Optimizer, noise reduction, and demosaic processing." [Canon]
It supports only new R lenses, so I wonder if Canon has gone as far as to create profiles libraries from the factory, unique to each lens associated to its serial number ?

That would be a good reason to paid for this IMO, otherwise, the generic DxO would work as good for a lower price and compatible with much more lenses and bodies.

Looking forward to see comparisons !

Yes DLO is true digital deconvolution specific to the lens type, not just USM. I was not even aware of that tool. Where do you find Neural Network?

They just released it.

Not sure why is not news here yet.

If you upgrade to the latest DPP should be there.

They have not released the update for Mac yet. Been waiting for it.

Re: New Canon Neural Network Image Processing Tool 1.0

I noticed it, and have a question:

What is the price of a subscription?

I doubt that I'll install it and begin the subscription process to find out. Why is Canon being so coy?

I don't know.

And no idea why this is not big news since a lot of people have been complaining about the lack of intelligence in dedicated cameras like Smartphones have.

So Canon came with this now and nobody seem to have noticed it. Lol

On Canon UK this is mentioned but there is nothing about it being subscription based.  However the latest version of DPP in the same site is (Aug 2022) v4.16.11 which doesn’t sound like a recent update.  Does anyone have more info?

I just downloaded the software and ran it on one of my noisy images (R7).

1. Price per month is $4.99. The first 31 days are free but you need to enter a credit card to start. If you cancel within the 30 days there is no charge.

2. It's a 1 GB download.

3. It handles my R7 but not my RP.

4. My experience on my image was not impressive. I saw very little improvement over the raw starting image and it took over a minute to process.

I plan to use it on some more images but it does not look like a keeper for me.

There is an annual plan for $49.99.

Thanks for the info.

How it compares with DxO PL6 which does essentially the same but with thousands of bodies and lenses combos, it uses GPU for super fast processing and is a permanent license that you can use in 2 PC’s ?

You would think Canon would have a competitive advantage if they had unique profiles made for each lens copy at their factory given the unavoidable variations. But looks like they are using generic profiles.

In Canada the monthly price is $5.99 or annual payment of $59.99.

I downloaded the 1g of data, once downloaded the ADD-On to DPP, and now it states that is is not compatible with my computer.

I can't find info as why it is not compatible.

Also, there is a limit per month on how many times you can use the product, they don't say how many times.

So, apparently, not for me. I can't wait to see examples.

The DLO is already in the free DPP4, has been forever. The other features look cool though.  Is it in the US yet?

This is a list of the Neural Network hardware requirements . It says "For verified video cards, visit the Canon website." No link is provided.

I have a dim recollection that DPP relies on CUDA for GPU accelerated processing. I believe that's proprietary to nVidia. GPU acceleration is optional in DPP, but I speculate that it may be mandatory in the Neural Network application.

Here is one quick test. Default settings, no tweaking, 1500x1500 crop.

Edit: added DxO PL6 with DeepPrimeXD. Some colors go out of gamut here when compared to DPP.

Here is second quick test with this. I find this neural network extension pretty good for low light and high ISO images. Pretty much as good as DxO PL6 with this image and some cases even better (see images on my previous post). DxO PL6 seems to make more artifacts with DeepPrimeXD than this Canon Neural Network extension on images I tested these.

Tried also some low ISO images taken in better light and difference was very small. Might buy this for few months if I need to take lot of low light images with high iso some times. I have not bought DxO PL6, installed trial version to see how it compares to this and don't see reason to get it.

In this case and the one before Canon DPP + neural does a better job.

I believe its worth it, especially if using RF lens and RF bodies. The biggest caveat is computer / hardware compatibility. They are extremely tough on which GPUs they are supporting and its slightly high end. More inclined towards gaming GPUs.

Up to this point - having a slightly better GPU which skews more towards CPU utilization was perfectly fine for photo editing. In fact, it can have basic RAM. But apps such as these are hitting the market more and more. Very soon for photo editing the need for gaming level GPUs will become the norm.

Also - I feel the services offered by various commercial companies online or not will also see a substantial decline. Even more will be the wedding photographers, etc.

Currently, with "darktable" app on board I am working with a start up which is coming up with a product. It will take anyone's photos in a wedding and use neural network + machine language unstructured optimization to create wedding photos. It can even take (let's say) 10 photos, super impose them to create a virtual 3D and actually translate that as if there's a drone from the top taking some photos! If a particular "instance" was captured by many: for example: a bride then it'll apply heuristics and create the best dynamic range and view point of the bride. Just wow ...
