Is Canon done making powershots?
4

Haven't really kept up with the market since buying my G7X II but my friend's work G5X I work camera broke and she was asking me for suggestions.  We went perusing Power Shots and it seems the only ones readily available is the G7X III, no G5X II or G1X III in stock.  We ended up getting her a refurbished G5X because she loved and was so used to the camera (particularly the articulating screen).

I like my G7X II, still even after moving to a micro four thirds setup.  If they had ever upgraded the G3X to a faster focusing/operating camera like they did the G7X line, I think I would have gone for that instead of a micro four thirds system.

Anyhow, I hope that we are not seeing the last of the Power Shot line with existing remaining inventory.

Very possibly, with the exception of "concept models" (eg. Powershot Zoom).

It's really a guess. The market dictates the production and new releases of additional models. I am seeing the prices of used power-zooms and special needs discontinued models rising is price. Leica just introduces a new M6. A film camera to fill the demand for that model in used condition. Simple economics. Can we make a profit? Yes, then bring it back. i think we'll see much more of this with specialized digital compacts. Hope so!

I agree. I have no interest in using a phone for photography becaue there is no eye-level viewfinder and because there are no direct controls, I know I'm not alone. I don't think it would take much R&D to put a basic electronic viewfinder in a G16. I'd much rather buy something like that for a sensible price than an overpriced mirrorless camera with a slow kit kens with limited zoom and poor close up performance.

They'll never tell. Canon almost never releases plans to discontinue a product. They may admit it's discontinued after they sell the last one and have no hope of making more.

My guess - and that's all that it is - is that with the decline of the M series there will be room at the lower end of the price scale for either a resurrection of the PowerShot line or a new line of similar bridge cameras. That's my hope, at least.

P.S. As much as I'd like to see a new PowerShot model (or something similar), with the fact that Canon still has supply issues for their high-margin stuff, I don't expect we'll see anything soon.

You might argue that is (was) the G5x ... Then they went and chopped its head off in the x mark ii.
I have a G16. I haven't really used it that much. But I love that it really is pocketable in a way that the G5x (got used recently and very impressed with its output). I have found the G5x viewfinder nice (still using Nikon D7500)  but its housing sure does stick out a lot :-o

The G7X II, G5X II, and G1X III are all still being manufactured. However, there is a huge manufacturing backlog.
For instance, each of those models has a 3-month wait when ordered directly from Canon Japan (as does the G7x III).
The Canon US web store has the  G7X II in stock. But, unlike the JP store, they just list cameras as "out of stock", if they can't deliver right away, unlike Japan, where they take your order now as a reservation, and ship later when it becomes available. That might give the impression that some models are discontinued. But, even the G7X III is "out of stock in the US store. And, that is certainly not discontinued, as it's their newest premium compact.

BTW, a quick glance at B&H shows the G5X I in stock for a great price. Just an FYI.

I have a G15 that I continued to use at work because of it's great macro after getting my G7X but unfortunately it eventually broke.  Now sadly I just use my iphone (for work).

G1x Mk iv on Steroids (baby R7)

If only Canon would read our mind and treat us with a G1x Mk iv on Steroids (baby R7)

I can go back to sleep and have sweet dreams... but that would be awesome

Food for thought...

The G1X3 is a total gem, as well as the only true "premium" compact out there (it's basically a mini D and was designed by the same team.)

Because I would be amazed if Canon ever gets its head out its rear end, I believe there will not be a G1X4. I therefore recently bought a backup to mine for $599 from Canon USA (refurb but looks and works like new, probably a return from some idiot who didn't like that it doesn't have a "selfie screen" LOL.)

What does a "G1x Mk iv on steroids” mean to you, a G1X III with the R7’s sensor and processor?

I like my G1X III a lot, but a Mk IV needs a brighter lens, and possibly a larger zoom range. Otherwise, it’ll get the same market response as the Mk III did, unfortunately.

A combination of the Mk III’s features (articulating screen, EVF, weather sealing), the R7’s processor and sensor, and G1X Mark II’s lens spec (in terms of full frame-equivalent focal length range and f-stop) and size would be an amazing travel/hiking camera. Personally, I’d be fine with using a crop of the sensor (like the LX100’s do) to get a smaller camera if need be, since that’d still be ~27 MP, which is plenty.

Of course, it’d be a $1,300+ camera at that point, probably ...

I'd go with that for the only reason that a faster zoom lens doesn't exist on Canon crop sensor mirrorless, not ef-m nor rf-s, and probably never will. The G1X III's 15-45 f2.8-5.6 is unique to it. And also the G1X III is entirely weather resistant, including the lens. No sealed lens on all crop sensor Canon mounts lenses (except on some third party). I've been taking my G1X III on hikes, to the beach,...so far worry free.
