Would you still buy the 85mm f/1.2L II usm?

Re: Would you still buy the 85mm f/1.2L II usm?

I wanted the EF 85mm 1.2L and I bought one but had to return it because I couldn't get it to focus reliably on my 6D, which was my main body at the time.

I've seen a lot of beautiful work with the lens, and I still see it, but it just never worked out.

I now have the RF 85mm 1.2, which I am extremely happy with. Sometimes though, I wish I could make the lens flare a little easier and although I wouldn't go back to the EF version just for that, I do miss the way older lenses would create flares.

Just got a 85/1.4L IS, and compared the 85/1.2L ii. They are same in center area sharpness, 1.4L is better at the corners. Even both at F/1.4,the 1.2L still get better bokeh, bright part is brighter, melted better. Comparing them side by side, I prefer the 1.2L image. But if you're not putting them side by side, you probably will not see the difference.

With the kids outside, 1.2L can give creamy backgrounds, sometimes can be too much as no more background can be seen, all of them are creamy white. Outside playground, it's easy to find the bokeh chance, the 1.4L will be better. But if you like the milky bokeh, 1.4L just can't replace 1.2, especially when in some cases it's not easy to create the bokeh limited by background distance.

I absolutely love the lens. Especially shooting it on R bodies, where the AF is more accurate. Yes, it's slow. Yes, it's optically imperfect, but I love the bokeh and the rendering, and with my generally middle-aged clientele, it's ideal.
The f1.4 is a great option for many things. The RF f1.2 is astonishing. The ancient f1.8 is still fantastic for the money, and the RF f2 is actually great too. But I can't imagine not having this lens.

I upgraded to the 85mm f1.4 and that lens has better image quality and extremely fast focus. For my purposes there is very little difference between f1.4 and f1.2. It's now one of my favorite lenses.

I second that recommendation, because the EF 85mm F1. 4L IS USM is one of the gold standard L lenses, while the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM has been discontinued, and effectively, orphaned. However, it's not easy to find the 2017 f/1.4  on the used market, at a price that is within the budget of the OP.
