interesting, and surprise

interesting, the full size version of the image shows a ruffled surface on the yellow bristles.

The eyes are surprisingly smooth. I had expected to see faceted eyes. Does one see an image of the photo lens as reflected in the eyes?

Re: interesting, and surprise

Bernard,

I too thought at first the “pupil” was a reflection of the Nikon objective, but when looking directly at the front of the objective, it doesn’t look like the reflection.  Perhaps it is a reflection of the objective, just distorted by the convex curvature of the eye surface.  Maybe others can confirm what’s going on.  Internal eye structure reflections maybe?

Cheers,

Bob

the closeup perspective of the microscope lens via the spherical reflective eyeball might distort the view into what the image shows.

It most definitely is the reflection of the front of the objective lens and the styrofoam cup diffuser around it. It is clearly seen in this test stack (just received a new 4x objective) of the same subject. BTW, very happy with the new objective.

Which objective?

Weird, at first glance I see an Ewok. It takes a few seconds to resolve into an spider.

Are  you going to tell us which objective, or keep us in suspense?

The term "mirrorless" is totally obsolete. It's time we call out EVIL for what it is. (Or, if you can't handle "Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens" then Frenchify it and call it "LIVE" for "Lens Interchangeable, Viewfinder Electronic" or "Viseur électronique").

what is an Ewok, a weird fantasy character, star wars ?

His opening post mentioned Nikon CFI 10x , its reflection off a tiny spherical mirror might look as in the image.

Re: Which objective?

Sorry, didn’t mean to be coy - it’s the Nikon CFI BE Plan 4X.  I must say, the price/performance ratio is hard to beat.  I will be doing more tests, but right now, I’m very satisfied based on this initial use.

btw, my rig is:

‘Nikon D500, Nikon PB6 bellows, Wemacro rail slider, Raynox DCR150, Nikon CFI Plan 10X/BE 4X, styrofoam diffuser, Nikon R1C1 flash kit w/flashes mounted on articulating arms.  Specimen stage is a kludge of manual sliders and the Proxxon micro milling table.

Did I say I prefer Nikon😁

Exactly.

Tell me you don’t see the resemblance…

His opening post mentioned Nikon CFI 10x , its reflection off a tiny spherical mirror might look as in the image.

And his latest post said "just received a new 4x objective".

p.s. Nikon makes about a dozen different CFI Plan10x objectives: everything from the Achromatic that goes for about $200, on up through the Epi, Pol, BD, Apo, Fluor, UV-VIS-IR, and even a "Super Fluor" at about $5,000.

Cool. BE or BD?

BE or BD plan?

Current Nikon objectives are pretty stunning. Heck, even a series or two before what you have are dang fine.

Me too. They make some nice stuff.

I have about 20 assorted Nikon objectives, mostly CF (finite, 210mm tube) BD, ELWD, and DIC ranging from 2.5x to 160x. Also some CFI, and one CFI60 that is literally my only biological objective. I believe with the CFI Nikon started calling "strain free" objectives POL instead of DIC. Also two Optiphot 88 scopes, one of which is set up for DIC.

And a couple of PB4 bellows. I had a PB6, but I prefer the PB4. I may get another PB6, because it's easier to automate than the PB4. That's for the CF objectives, also some Leitz Photar and Zeiss Luminar macro lenses, and the 28mm f/1.8 Ultra Micro Nikkor (yes, that's a real lens, lol).

I am basically just starting out with this photomacro thing having moved over here from the astrophoto world.  I have a lot to learn.

Photo of the rig.

Bellows is compressed here and the styrofoam cup diffuser is removed.
