Re: Show Your Snaps...November 14, 2022

There's so much we can do with these cameras.  I haven't explored a lot of the options; I just use the camera that suits my purpose.  There's always something new to learn.

Re: Ginkgo leaves hiding the pond

That looks neat, something similar to the Japanese Gardens in Portland, Oregon.  Where I live the cold weather has dropped a lot of the autumn leaves too.

That looks great.  How much snow will you all be getting?

I know a lot of  people that agree.

Cool photo.

I see you used the EF 35-80mm III. What do you think of that lens?

I had the USM version as my very first DSLR lens - I didn't have a very good time with it. I was always wishing for a wider angle - I should've got an 18-55mm. The best thing about it was the light weight.

"the EF 35-80mm III"

It just keeps impressing me with its rendering. It's my light, versatile "f/8 and be there" lens; I no longer castigate its lack of super-sharpness. But I won't shoot it wider than f/8.

With my recently acquired SL1 it makes for the lightest, quickest, walkin-around DSLR package I can think of. And that facilitates taking pictures.

I use my 7D for more deliberate tasks. Nothing I own tops the 7D's flash metering and I nearly always use flash.

Thanks.

What do you think about the 100D/SL1 in comparison to your little M4/3 camera? I'm really struggling with my 7D's weight but I don't want to give up the 7D's great features or go to the dark side (anyone but Canon).

I would think so. How far are you for your first snow?  Do you expect snow in a few weeks?

The birch tree stands out from the rest.  Is it a native tree or was it planted?

SL1 vs M43
1

I've had terrible luck with the generation of M43s I've sampled. Two spontaneously fried and I need to send them both back.

The SL1 is wonderfully quiet for a DSLR with its "silent mode" and that's the main reason I've chased mirrorless cameras, the quieter shutters, along with their manual focus aids.

I'm not willing to spend on a newer generation of mirrorless when I can get adequate service from this little DSLR. I've discovered that finicky manual focus is not that important to me.

For my purposes, a quiet, light DSLR body that uses my existing EF lenses is the sweet spot. I feel well equipped with this SL1 and my 7D for long lenses. Maybe an SL2 in the future for the 24MP, but otherwise my gear lust is pretty well satiated.

Thanks.

That  may well be enough to steer me away from M4/3. I do really like Canon, but the weight is difficult.

Re: SL1 vs M43

I'd give one a try. An SL1 is roughly half the used price of either the SL2 or SL3. That's not a big expense for toe-dipping in this class of DSLRs.

I'm quite content with mine and will not be revisiting M43; too lilliputian and fragile for me.

Thanks, Digirame...

... for the copious EF-S 18-135 samples at many different focal lengths!

It's my next lens.

Re: Thanks, Digirame...

You are welcome.  I bought mine on Ebay from a reputable seller for less than $150 (USD).  It's the USM version too.  I know I got it for a good price; it's usually more.  It's excellent without any scratches.  It stays on one of my cameras all of the time.
