I failed to mention that the FE 90 mm macro by Sony has internal focusing.  That is tremendously helpful if you are doing nervous insects.  It is also much safer to hang filters or holders on the front of the lens.  You wont damage the focus mechanism with the extra weight.

Good point, I do agree!

Thanks for chiming in Phil, nice shots!

Thanks!

I wish I could get a lens like the Laowa 25 that talked to the camera and could focus wide open then stop down for the shot that had the 2.5x to 5x range for the $399 price.

Even a used Sony 90 is 2x the cost of the Laowa and only gives 1:1 (which I have with my APS-C Sony rig).

Well, they are two totally different beasts for different use scenarios. In the 2.5x to 5x range focusing will have to be manual and slow anyway (also for focus stacking, which is very good idea for those magnifications). Up to 1:1 (and combined e.g. with a achromatic diopter easily some more) the Sony 90 is not only a very sharp, but also a very versatile and fast lens to use.

In any case I'm not ready to pull the trigger yet...

Take your time. Both lenses are plenty in supply AFAIK.

I purchased the Laowa 25mm and just received it today. The focus area is really razer thin at 5x macro, even at F16 (which you don't want to use anyhow). So, focus stacking is essential. There is no manual focusing on this lens, you can only move the body forwards and backwards. It's impossible to do that by hand for these mm zones of focus.

So now I will need a focusing rail. I'm not so sure if I still think this lens was worth a try

What other macro lenses have you shot?

Did you take any images?

What body did you have it on?

I've shot 3 other lenses on three other bodies and I have a focus rail and plan to stack.

I guess I'm still curious.

Did you pay 399 for it?

I also have a Sony 90mm. Shooting on an A7R V. I do need to do some further experimenting with the Laowa in better light, the photos that I took today are not worth showing. I bought it directly from venuslens.net, so yeah, $399.

For me, the difference between the Laowa and the Sony is clear though. The Laowa 25 really is a specialty macro lens for specific situations, and focus stacking is required. I should add I am mainly interested in using this lens at 5x macro. Whereas the Sony 90mm is a more all-round macro lens that you can shoot hand-held out in the field. Autofocus and manual focus ring is so much more practical than having nothing on the Laowa. And the Sony is pretty good for portraits too for example.

That said, I have seen Youtubers shooting with the Laowa 25mm outside, but most likely at 2.5x. Since I am mainly interested in the 5x macro, for me that means, studio only, and on a rail. At least, I hope I can get some usable images out of the lens in those conditions, we'll see.

It seems there are a lot of these available in "Like New" condition for around $800. I'm wondering why?

I own this lens too

I got it new for 818E this summer ( there was a big cash back offer on this lens and some others , this year I bought a lot of lenses because of that )

This is an amazing lens for macro and portrait : sooooo sharp.

I will not sell it, but if one day I sell it for 800E I'll not loose any money.

So I think that this price correspond to the price of this lens this summer.

I suspect a lot of people see amazing closeup photos, buy the lens, then get bored as they didn’t realise how much hard work it takes to get decent photos. So after a while they sell it. I picked up a like new used Nikon 105mm F2.8 MC lens, when new ones were impossible to get. The owner bought one of the first batch made, used it for garden flower pictures, and sold it after six months.

A few recent focus stacked images I made of my father's tools. a7IV, 90mm 2.8 G Macro, Godox light panel, dirty walnut table top in my home office. Helicon for stacking, Lr for processing.
