Fujifilm X-E2 would always shoot dark photos on Auto shutter/iso on bright environment

I've always shot with my X-E2 with 35mm 1.4 on a bright sunny day with this settings before I updated it:

  • Dial Shutter: A
  • Dial Exposure: "0"
  • ISO Auto 800

Now I have updated my firmware and whenever I take a photo on a bright environment, my LCD is very dark although when I press the shutter, it will light up a little and turn back to very dark again. The actual photo is also very dark,

The only thing I can at least make my LCD preview bright is when I dial my shutter to 180x but that will still be dark. Even higher like 125 and up then my shot will be blurry. I also try to make the ISO higher at around 1600 auto but same blurry photos.

Here's a video where I'm testing it very near to a window where its very bright outside with my iPhone. You can see the settings that I use on the LCD and the actual settings of my dials. Please suggest what can be done with this. I have already reset my settings but still the same thing happen.

ANSWER:
Fujifilm X-E2

What's your photometry setting?

And your aperture setting?

It looks like the rear dial has over rode the ‘A’ option on shutter dial.

check custom settings for your dial.

shutter speed showing fixed at 1/4000

its also showing your in manual mode.

My photometry settings seems to be Spot. My apperture settings is A + M but I cannot change it. Here's a video of my settings. If you can help spot the problem that I can change, I'll appreciate it.

Thanks!

I can see now that on the bottom left, I'm on manual mode. But how can I get out of manual mode? How can I change that setting? I tried changing a lot of the settings but none seems to work.

Here's another video to show my settings. If you can please help to check what I need to adjust. I hope this is enough but if it's not I'll take more videos. Thanks!

In the clip, you turn the camera around (lens facing you) and you switch from M to S at the same time.

Put it on Auto and see if the photos are still dark.

Rotate the rear dial until shutter speed changes from 1/4000 to “A” so it matches your top shutter speed dial.

I think I know what is going on.   I dont have the X-E2, but in some cameras you have the option to manage Shutter speed with one of the wheels when you put it on A (aslo called Command setting) , rather than being really in  Auto. Is a setting in the Menu

In the screen I can see that the shutter speed is in blue, with the 1/2 wheel on top, this indicates that you are not really on auto speed, but it is in Command, and you have to control the shutter speed with the back wheel.

I think is in wrench 2, button/dial settings, to change the option to Auto

Rotate the rear dial until shutter speed changes from 1/4000 to “A” so it matches your top shutter speed dial.

I figured out the problem now. In this video, you can see that the dial is not responding properly after I set the SS dial to more than 15.

So when I rotate the SS dial from 4, 8, 15, the blue indication on the bottom left changes correctly. When I finally change it to 30, the blue indicator at the bottom stays at 15. So

Dial == Indicator

15 == 15
30 == 15
60 == 30
125 == 60

-- hide signature --

4000 == 2000
A == 4000
Meaning, it's not actually turning to "A", it remains at 4000 because when the dial turns to 30, the indicator did not change to 30. So I'm shooting at 1/4000, not auto.
Is this a hardware problem? I really thought this changed  when I updated the firmware.

Others that have had similar issues, generally it is a hardware fault requiring repair or replacement of the top plate by Fujifilm.

Re: Fujifilm X-E2 would always shoot dark photos on Auto shutter/iso on bright environment

I used an XE-2 for about 6 years and during that time I had a problem after I had updated the firmware. I sent the camera back to the camera shop where I had bought it. When the camera shop returned the camera I noticed that they reset the firmware to the previous version. I was always under the impression that a firmware update cannot be undone, but it is what it is and the camera worked as before the update.

I wonder if I can just downgrade the firmware and it will all be back to normal or do I need to send it to the fujifilm service center for them to fix it. In anyway, I'll email them and tell them the problem. Thanks!

I'm following this thread...The exact thing happened to me last night while trying to shoot in low light. I never use this camera for low light so I had never noticed the problem after I upgraded the firmware.
