Good substitute for a film camera
1

Hello, I'm not sure if this the right forum, but the film forum might be even more incorrect. I recently wrote an article explaining how I chickened-out using my new, used Olympus XA2, and as an exercise shot the "roll" on a Canon S100.

https://photosalesrep.blogspot.com/2022/11/digital-alternative-to-olympus-xa2.html

Thanks

I understand where your coming from, i owned many G cameras, currently i have G1X mk1 with the optical viewfinder. The positive film setting is the one i use the most. I have shot film but its too expensive. The G1X kinda gives me that rangefinder experience. Obs its nothing like it, but i like the way it handles.

I have been creating Canon film sims using their picture style editor. But unlike the EOS M i have. i cant load on them to the camera, just for post on raws.

I still have my Olympus XA that I bought in 1981. I have not used it for many years though. The XA2 looks almost the same as the XA, but some of the features were removed in the XA2.  For example, the XA has rangefinder focusing and the XA2 has zone focusing.

Use a fast film in the XA2 (ISO400 or even better 800).  Just use the centre distance setting unless you’re taking something a long way away, and avoid very close things.   The XA2 was built as a camera for everyone to take on holiday, like an Olympus Trip.  Don’t try and overthink it, it’s not an SLR - fast film will give you a small aperture and bigger depth of field.  (I have an XA3, although I find  the shutter release a little light)

Of course that this camera is a good substitute of your Olympus. Actually, any digital camera would suit you. However I do not understand, why you would limit yourself to shoot just with the 35mm (FF equivalent) focal length. And why not below 3 ft? This is the magic of the modern photographic tools, they are far more versatile!

New constraints can drive creativity, especially after the inevitable acclimation to ease.

The EF-M 22mm + M200 it is a very light and compact combination with excellent IQ. 👍🏻
