Tones, white balance, and ISO handling are top notch. I feel the R3 handles large lenses like the RF 28-70 f/2L well, and makes the most of mine.

Custom WB, LR

Courtesy of setting the WB in LR... Wasn't happy with the "nostalgic shift" it gave the Auto WB it picked up from the RAWs. DPP4 and in-camera don't (appear to) share this trouble.

Re: R3+RF28-70 F/2L

+1 Love this lens for shooting peeps.

Had a real struggle deciding whether or not to get the R3, but wanted to keep the size down.  Plus I've been holding out for the R1 as my "big" body.    No doubt that the R3 is King of the Hill right now though!!

But I figure the R6ii will tide me over until then.

Eh, the stacked sensor is something to write home about in the R3. Real shame the R6II is non stacked, FSI.

24MP is still welcome, but the low light EV rating of the R6II tells me it’s still FSI. The R3 though, is definitely “pro”, the R5/6, don’t have that same feel/polish. Or price

Yeah I did the evaluation, and the R6ii sensor will suit my needs for what I'll be using it for.  No prob for me there.  And I have my R5 if I need a little extra boost in various areas (resolution, buffer, weather sealing, readout speed, etc).

Don't be saying those things!  You're going to cost me more money!!

I will be using the R6ii in a "pro" capacity too though (which I'm doing with the R6 right now), and am definitely looking forward to the upgrades!

zooming in on the second one, the noise is too much to accept for this setup without proper processing

looks like the R6II rocks, particularly with the improvements to e-shutter, lack of rolling shutter

you can shoot in e-shutter 40 fps most of time

and am definitely looking forward to the upgrades!

Actually the noise levels are very acceptable given the ISO and amount of gain applied in LR at that.

Now to your point… LR; it has poor noise reduction, absolutely. You’ll get no fight from me on that. I didn’t apply any (defaults). Had I? Clean. I prefer DPP4 NR though, by a country mile too. I’m not sold on prime. Artifacts from it, are undesirable. DPP4 or even OOC using in camera RAW or SOOC, stomp on LR noise reduction. Noise reduction on Canon RAW is Adobes kryptonite. Processing NR, WB, picture profile to TIFF first in DPP4, and then passing to LR, is ideal, but more work.

Why would he zoom in? Does this picture is gonna end up as a mural? Or a gigantic 60x40 inch print?

Enjoy your camera and the moments you capture with it, no need to develops OCD about details and noises and whatnot. No one is gonna look at that memory in 10, 20 years and say « oH YEah ThIs CoUld HavE UsEd BeTer NoiSe PP »

true, but

the op lacks best in class NR tools was my point - and could generate better stuff with tools costing 1/10 the cost.

put best in class NR into the equation as you practice for the big event

DPP4 is the right tool for low ISO (not LR)

MAC and I go back, it's fine, him and I agree on some things, other things we agree to disagree. That's how it should be. I have no ill will with others with opinions. I have to agree with him that LR isn't a one-size-fits all, where I disagree is Prime also being a one size fits all. I may re-try it some day, maybe soon, but not at the moment.

LR is the wrong tool for high ISO shots...

DPP4 is... +2/3 Brightness, "TIFF-d" and raised the shadows a touch (+13) in LR. Left NR on "low" in DPP4. Perfectly happy with the above myself.

Event Photographic Revolution

The R3 is proving to be an event killer. I did a fresh eye-controlled AF calibration at Chuck E Cheese last night and gave it another shot; when you set AF Box 1 to a rate 2 smaller than default (confine/shrink it), it's a gamechanger. It works as advertised. You can think, and the camera will comply with autofocus. Really slick. I can swap from one kid to another, from a kid to a venture/object, and back again. Effortlessly, flawlessly.

Pair with an RF 28-70 f/2L, where you have 5 primes on tap?... Pair with 30FPS and a Cobalt card that can keep up?... Talk about never missing a shot. I'll even venture to say genuinely useful. Never thought I'd say that of 30FPS, always thought 14FPS on my former M6 II was too much. I've changed my mind from like it, to love it (regarding the R3).

Eye-controlled AF, when it works, is brutal. It truly is revolutionary. And 30FPS? Not a gimmick either. You capture the moment, you get the shot.

Now of the 1300 shots I took last night (thankfully all on ES, so I'm not burning up my mechanical shutter), 200 keepers. It's not that the other 1100 weren't good, I just didn't need em.

RF mount was supposed to be revolutionary, I'll say the R3 might be, just as "Goliath" aka the RF 28-70 f/2L is.

I sincerely hope eye-controlled AF trickles it's way down to lower end models, even in a smaller viewfinder, for when I don't want to bring the R3 along.

Also, the pairing of a large capacity battery, with 30FPS, and CFE, is necessary. The R3 does it's job well.

For professionals, which I am not, this is the sort of camera that makes sure you take home a paycheck. For me as a hobbyist, I take home smiles.

Need to spend more time refining the AF configuration and setup of the R3, but I'm finding it's growing on me. What I never mentioned on the forum, I almost returned the R3 after the first day. It's one of those cameras you need to give a shot, you need to be patient with and get a good calibration, get it setup to your needs. The original R was similar (but different), I hated that camera till I got it's AF system to work for me. The R3 although works out of the box, getting eye-controlled AF to work, is magical.

Sharing some shots from last night, nothing "special", but they're memories to me.

Was thinking about that today, you know as amazing as a combo the R3 / 28-70L is, you need something to shoot with it. I've got 4, going on 5 kids shortly. Unless to your point, you have something to shoot, I don't recommend folks splurge on such a thing unless you're a paid pro.
