Magic Lantern?

I keep seeing mentions about Magic Lantern, the best thing since sliced bread for Canon DSLRs.

Apparently it installs things like an Intervalometer into the camera? Very useful although I do have a Pixel😊

Does anybody use it, got any experience of it?

Forget all this, just found that although it's available for the Canon 650D, it states for Firmware 1.0.4 only. I';ve recently updated to 1.0.5!!!

Meh Lantern

Yeah, I toyed with installing ML on my 7D but I'd have to first update my current FW version and I really haven't seen anything it would to do for me as a viewfinder-only shooter.

I had hoped it might let me add the slower-mirror/quieter-shutter of the Mk II but combing through their website did not confirm that.

Ah, the 7D! Used it for years with the 100-40mm on the front until it got too heavy for my old neck & shoulders. Got a Sony RX10M4 and never looked back!

My ML experience

Magic Lantern is third-party firmware that you can install onto your DSLR, and it's does not replace the cameras original firmware.

I used ML on my 1200D happily. Then, with my next cam, a 600D, I had trouble with it and had a quick moment of panic when the camera wouldn't turn on. As you can imagine that put me off.

Anyways, the camera was not damaged and in the end I sold it and got myself a 7D instead. I want to install ML, mainly for the intervalometer (for timelapses). It would save me £20 or so.

But the problem is, I would have to downgrade the cameras official firmware first (2.0.6, ML only supports 2.0.3), and my last experience put me off.

Bottom line - ML is really good, but it's not guaranteed to be safe, although it usually works fine if you follow the instructions precisely.

I just saw this last part,

It is actually possible the downgrade your camera's firmware, if you're interested. I did it on my 600D.

Re: Magic Lantern?

It is possible to downgrade firmware.

I use ML mainly for raw based exposure feedback.

Heh... I used to lift weights, too, but now only use a rowing machine.
