I have been using this lens now since I first bought it with the EOS R kit back in March 2020, and have adapted it further with my R5.

This lens is very versatile and is the perfect travel companion. If you just want one general purpose lens, this is likely it. It won't give you the best bokeh, but still quite usable.

I don't have too much else to say about it, and I don't bother being too technical about it as it's enough info out there already. But this is a "kit" lens I would recommend everybody to have, unless they perfectly know what suits themselves best - obviously.

The biggest limitations for this is that it's not an ultra wide or tele lens :P The f/4 doesn't bother me almost at all, not even in the dark. Yes, you might need to bump the ISO a bit or "shake less with your hands" (adjusting the shutter). But it's not a deal braker, at least it's a fixed f/4.

Practical but cannot replace a very sharp 35mm F/1.4 or 85mm F/1.2 or 105mm F/1.4

Not producing magical images

but yes it’s practical

Or 35 F1.8 or 50 F1.8 or 85 F2 or 100 F2.8 for that matter.

Definitely. The images may not be magical in themselves, but they are sharp. I find most image magic comes from subject matter and lighting. This lens is definitely capable of producing magical images, but the magic doesn’t come from the lens.

Mine also came as the R's kit lens.

It is a great all rounder L zoom.

The F4 might not produce as deeply out of focus background as the 50 F1.8, but the bokeh is smoother, in my experience.

I have both the RF 24-105 4.0L and the RF 24-240 4-6.3 and think very highly of each of them. If zoom range, with high IQ across the range, is important (flexibility) then I use the 10x zoom. If I want to shoot at f4.0 across the zoom range, then I use the L lens. Each has it's place. I guess it's about 50/50 in re: frequency of uses.

Here are a few shot with the 10x zoom. It has never disappointed me.
