Viewing apple pro res formats on windows

Hello. I am considering getting the new fuji x-h2. I can see the 8k video can only be recorded with some apple prores formats (prores 422 hq, prores 422, prores422 lt) I use davinci resolve studio and believe I should be able to edit these formats (so long as I render them out in something else) but will I be able to view and play the files in windows (for example if I just want to quickly check them when sorting through files). Sorry if this is a dumb question btw

You mean outside of Resolve? Resolve should play anything except ProRes Raw.

A quick google search seems to imply VLC can play the files.

Does the camera really only give you ProRes? Those files can be pretty big.

DNxHR and Cineform are good mezzanine codec alternatives to ProRes.

You can get plug-ins like Voukoder to enable ProRes encoding in Resolve Studio, but I'm not sure if it's genuine ProRes or just a GUI for FFmpeg's unofficial ProRes.

I got the impression that the native Windows doesn't support ProRes, but some 3rd party apps do. Adobe Bridge (a free DAM) should support it.

Thanks for the reply. Yep just to preview files without having to open resolve. It's a really new camera so it's tricky to find info and everywhere I looked so far only mentions the pro res options. I will keep looking for more info but its good to know that VLC should work

Thanks. I will look into these options some more. I've seen a few mentions of the voukoder plugin so it's good there are options if I need it

I'm very happy with MPV player - it even plays my CLOG3 Canon H265 10 bit IPB

My Sony Slog3 10 Bit I convert to PRORES for Davinci but I can preview using MPV player.

it also works with GPU cards on my WIndows 10

You can add your own config file to MPV player

this goes in the mpv.conf file

My settings

# High quality video rendering for fast computer.
hwdec=cuda
fs=no
autofit-larger=50%x50%
ontop=yes
Alt+- add video-zoom -0.25
Alt+= add video-zoom 0.25
vd-lavc-threads=128
vd-lavc-dr=yes
audio=yes
untimed=yes
cache=no
#video-sync=display-desync
vulkan-swap-mode=immediate
opengl-swapinterval=0
opengl-pbo
# osd-msg1="FPS: ${estimated-display-fps} Size: ${file-size}"
# autofit=100%
