Scary?
9

I have found that ants of a species with very small specimens, ~5mm long, looks very strange when seen very close up (enlarged a lot), compared to how they look with the naked eye.

Alive specimen on the field. (<4mm FoV)

Re: Scary?

I would like to know how you got that much detail.  Is it stacked?  There is no lens listed in the meta data.

Re: Scary?

For macro I use Nikon mount optics and accessories, older models with full manual control, plus Sony mount adapter, so there is no way to display information about the optics and aperture used (between f:11 and f:16 in this case).
As you know, details are degraded quickly at high ISO, in underexposed areas, or with incorrect lighting.
In this case, the lighting was provided with flash and a multi-facets white diffuser, very large (relative to the surface of the area photographed) and which provided a volumetric light, i.e. with different intensity on different areas of the diffuser (including a side metal reflector at the head of the flash, for this effect).
Respectively I tried to get at least minimum illumination all around the subject, with emphasis from certain angles, in order to keep as many details as possible.

Finally a recipe for enhancing and a significant crop (probably 20% of the original frame).
Just for fun, I spent a few hours for fine tuning in detail extraction.

Re: Scary?

Thanks for the information.  I may be able to use some of that.  I am old and get worn out quickly but get a lot of pleasure from discovery and seeing other peoples work.

Re: Scary?

Almost the same for me, but I'm also lazy and have a hard time getting started. 😎😀

Isn't that why we do macro? Little aliens they are...and it's fascinating to make that visible to ourselves and others...

Kind regards,

Bas

Re: Scary?

🙂

The more enlargement, the more fascinating details. Try to find and see something like this in stereo 3D on a large screen. This is "the thing"!🙂
