Room for My Damn Thumb!

GX7 and I are very compatible!

Without the EVF hump where my right thumb wants to be, I don't have to hook the thumb over the top as my shutter "finger" as with my dearly departed E-M10.

Granted, there is no comparison regarding IBIS between the two; the Oly just smokes the Pana on that score.

But what the hey... that's why I've practiced so much with bounce flash.

Re: Room for My Damn Thumb!

Yes, the IBIS of GX7 is just not more than 0.5 stop, which is just better than nothing for non IS lens. I suppose every IS lens from Panny, mostly around 3-3.5 stops effective stabilization would indeed be more important to Panny camera at that era. A reason why Panny bodies will use lens IS in preference of IBIS.

Even the GX85/G85 uses 5-axis IBIS sensor, they are still within effective range of 2~3 stops max. It is the DUAL IS/DUAL IS 2 making the in-camera stabilization of Panny camera to compare better with the IBIS of Olympus. As per a review by our friend Richard Wong on GX8 & 14-140 f/3.5-5.6 mk-I, such early DUAL IS system should be around 1 stop more effective than the IBIS alone of EM5 mk-II.

Extract from http://www.photobyrichard.com/reviewbyrichard/panasonic-lumix-gx8-review/

Until today the best IBIS of Panny, G9, is still not as powerful as the latest IBIS of Olympus yet. Therefore IS lens (for DUAL IS) is still important to Panny setup.

Although the no AA filter later model could deliver sharper SOOC output and also the 4K ples other newer features making photo more fun, I missed the tilt evf of GX7. It makes low angle shooting easy and this can always give me a very interesting angle of shooting. The FAS LCD of G85 (off axis when folded out) can hardly give me the same shooting experience.

Happy shooting.

I found it necessary to add a thumb grip for better/more secure handling.

In my case, IBIS is much over rated. I use the camera mostly out doors. Even so, with Panasonic's tiny 20mm and 12-32mm lenses, hand holding at slower speeds is not an issue.

I'll never part with this classic for every-day carry around use. It fits comfortably into a small discreet shoulder bag.

Thanks, Alcelc!

This camera makes my hand happy! May it last vastly longer then my E-M10!

Thumb Grip

Nice custom accessory., slotting into the hot shoe like that.

Since I always have an external flash attached, my solution will be a small, domed faucet washer super-glued to the back of the flash cover.

Good thing I buy used! I wouldn't know how to act with fancy new stuff.

Since I use the camera flash, not having the hot shoe immediately accessible is not an issue.

I use the flash mostly for flowers, for fill in daytime:

and at night.

Re: Thumb Grip

Be careful, that flash cover indeed is made of very soft plastic. I found it out in a hard way (used a cutter to remove some sticky label residue over it, resulted a big chunk of plastic been cutting out!)... Now I have to stick a piece of silver color label to cover it.

Yes, every part of that spindly little flash assembly screams Handle With Care!

Reminds me of a fragile, big-headed alien struggling with Earth's gravity.
